I am looking for info on 3 things from times gone by (early 70's) and would appreciate your help.

The things in question:-

Anything on DHSS cars
Edwards, Chester. A car dealer which originally sold a friend's a 1972 L plate Rover P6
Eastern Autos, Chelmsford. A car dealer which originally sold a friend's a 1972 K plate Rover P6

Let the PH digging begin!

Worth checking the Essex County Archive, they provided a copy of the register when a car of mine was issued its number.

Eastern Automobiles rings a bell. Pretty sure that they had a branch in Cambridgeshire ( Thriplow ? ) in the early 70s, they supplied one of my old TR6s new in early 1972. They were Rover and Triumph main Agents, long since gone.

Has your Rover one of the following Registration Nos ?
VX, TW, VW , OO , WC.all of which are Essex issued.

DVLA's on line 'Vehicle enquiry' (with regards to 'road tax')

The vehicle details for JXC 822D are:
  • Date of Liability - 01 07 2013
  • Date of First Registration - 29 07 1966
  • Year of Manufacture - 1966
  • Cylinder Capacity (cc) - 3520cc
  • CO₂ Emissions - Not Available
  • Fuel Type - PETROL
  • Export Marker - N
  • Vehicle Status - Unlicensed
  • Vehicle Colour - MAROON
  • Vehicle Type Approval - Not Available
the XC in the number suggests first registration was by London County Council and possibly unused since 1974 (numbers can move around though)

D is a 1966 car (Jan-Dec)

that's an early reg year for a Rover P6 3500 which model came out in 1968(?), there could be a few reasons for this apparent discrepancy

I'll pass this on (Neither Rovers are mine)

One of the Rovers in question has a VW number.

I used to constantly wander through James Edwards showroom in Chester - a main BL dealer. Used to nick all their brochures.

When I say BL, they sold Triumph, Rover and Jag, the Austin/Morris cars were sold at another franchised dealer.

I think I'm correct in thinking that XC was one of Rover's home registrations? Thought the press cars were often XCs

Old thread, I know - I was just researching that Rover myself. I used to see JXC822D around here quite a lot. Prototype V8 in a 2000 automatic shell. After its use as a mule, it was sold to William Martin Hurst, the Rover MD who 'discovered' the Buick V8 engine. It was latterly running a TVR Griffith 4-litre engine, but the original was sold with it each time. More info here: http://www.federalrovers.com/jxc822d

I''ll point them. Also as you've probably seen from my thread, the DHSS spec Minor is now back of the queue and I run a '65 2 door.
