You all know what I mean.

At 9am you idly consider buying yet another car, something you have no space or cash for, and by lunch time you've read every buyers guide and have got a shortlist of three to go and see.

You've already convinced yourself that if you flog a few rare parts on eBay and go to Spain rather than the Bahamas next summer it'll all work out fine and before you know it you've had a quick word with Hagerty and see it'll only cost you another couple of hundred quid (inc EU breakdown, natch) to add it to the fleet.

But then there is the breadknife to consider. Should I tell her now? Should I dress it up as an 'investment' because those in the know know that classic cars are better than money in the bank these days. Do you buy it her as a present knowing that you'll keep the keys and never let her see it again? Do you sell it to her as a passport to evenings spanking down the Route Napoleon en route to dinner at the Eden Roc and a night in the casino?

She's going to fking kill me isn't she?

If you google "classic car investment" you should find plenty to help you at the moment.

There are a couple of cars I've got my eye at the moment, and both have been with the respective dealers for a while so they may take an offer but we're renovating the house so I can't use the investment excuse at the moment ...

Or I can, but it won't get me anywhere. Next year, though ...

Blimey! It isn't just me today then!

I'm only thinking of buying a mates car instead of him scrapping it. A little saxo vtr that I'll do a few track days in it, then scrap it and get my money back on.

She actually didn't mind me doing this. I felt her forehead for a fever when she said ok to my plan!

You're doing it all wrong. I went to value a car, phoned the O/H to tell her to put down something to cover the lounge carpet and brought home an estate car full of boxes of car parts. The rolling shell arrived the following week on a trailer by which time I'd 'sold' the idea to her - though I did have to allow her to name it 'Smurfie' because it's blue...

Pitch to her an idea that is slightly more mental than you actually want. She will refuse it...you, as a good husband suck in the massive compromise and agree reluctantly to what you wanted to do in the first place.

My friend suggested to his wife that he spend £22.5k they didn't have on a Ducati Panigale S. She went beserk. After a few days of sulking he agreed that he would do the sensible things and buy a used Caterham for £15k instead. She was very relieved. It was what he had planned all along. Genius.

Excellent idea Dapster.

Better send the wife this link and then start working back from there. She'll be thanking me by tea time!

Heh!

As you know I expected my other half to hit the roof when I got the Lotus. Things at home were already pretty ropey.

I pitched it as soemting I bought so we could go out driving in it together...

Surprisingly, she didn't kick off at all. In fact, she likes it.

She can't stand me, but she likes the car!

I offered to take Mrs Ben out in the Porsche the other day. She got in and within 20 seconds said:

Where are the carpets?

Why does it smell of petrol?

Are these windows plastic?

I'm getting out.

I never even started it up with her in it!

I brought a bike round to the house on the test drive.
Me: This is where you sit
Her: No it isn't!

Bought it, she won't go on the back.

A few years back I was visiting the "garage" doing the engine swap on my XK. They then dropped me and another customer and his wife at the station to get the train back into town. After a short while, he pulls out a picture of a C-Type and we start chatting about it. His wife looks up from her reading and says something along the lines of "that's nice, are you going to buy it?" and he says well, I thought we could go and take a look.
I think I'm in the wrong life.
(But then I don't have a wife who races a classic Porsche)

Sorry you're doing it all wrong ...

I went out to buy her a Wedding ring before we got married and came back with a racing TVR Vixen .. much better value for money. Turned up to the Church in it :-)

From there everything is easy ....

Mine is far worse, she keeps encouraging me to buy cars. Considering my natural weakness for buying them and needing to clear cars out this isn't good!

I've almost got mine convinced that another 944 (S2 or Turbo this time) is a practical, affordable and sensible car. Saying that, I've almost got myself convinced too...

  • If you argue with the missus over buying the things that make you happy, that make working for a living worthwhile then you've got the wrong one! Get shot of her or move out and start again with one who appreciates you and understands...
Mine keeps telling me I ought to treat myself to a hot rodded '32 Ford, and was... err... instrumental in me getting my Jag' powered '36 Austin, it's no wonder I love her is it?

  • This doesn't mean treat her like st and never compromise tho', that makes you as bad as her!

Do you need to say anything?

Bring it home when she's out, park it at the back of the garage for a bit and if she notices come out with the line: 'this old thing? Had it years dear'

Well my OH tries that with handbags anyway...

I have car parts delivered to work so she doesn't know what I buy biggrin
