Classic Multi Car Insurance

I've now got seven classic cars in various stages of roadworthiness.

Five are insured at the moment and I'm always changing cars around.

I feel it's time I simplified things by getting one policy for the lot.

Has anyone got experience of the classic multi-car policies ?

Any recommendations or otherwise ?

I'm with R.H. at the moment and they have managed to accommodate a 1936 Austin 16 hot rod on Jaguar running gear, a Triumph Herald, Vincent Hurricane and an MX5 on the same policy. They don't routinely charge an admin fee if you change cars mid policy and I've heard nothing but good about their claims handling, but have no personal experience of that aspect. The policy is limited mileage tho' with each vehicle being subject to a maximum of 3,000 miles per year (I'm sure they could "up" this figure if needed).
A friend uses Hagerty for a collection of fifties Americans and has had similar service without admin fees for mid term adjustments etc.

Forgot to say that you will need a modern car policy in force to qualify for most of these schemes, R.H. were happy to accept my commercial policy on my truck.

I am with Adrian Flux and have 6 Alfas on one policy costing approx £900 per annum. 2 of the cars are imported (one LHD) and 4 of the 6 are substantially modified, limited mileage of 3,000 pa per car and agreed values.

Try Hagerty, I've got 2 Lotuses, 1 Alfa and 1 MG (total value about £30k) for about £450.00, agreed value and about 3000 miles each. Adding cars is great one you've got the policy running, usually less than 5 mins on the phone and usually about £60.

So far I've found Hagerty good for a multi-car policy too, ranging from a 1990s car back in time to a vintage tourer of the early twenties, and a lorry, all on one policy. The total premium is less than I was paying for the lorry on its own last year...

The staff are enthusiastic on the phone, and a lot more organised than the bunch I was with previously. No plans to change in the near future if this keeps up.

I asked Adrian Flux for lay up cover on two of my Jags, a 1990 XJR and a 1977 XJ-C, £125 each...............they then suggested a multicar..Both cars, Fully comp, 3000 miles each for £254.

£4 more and i get to drive them both

I have had a multi car policy with Footman James for years, with 3 named drivers. I currently have 4 Alfas (the newest is an '88 75 3.0) and a '67 Fiat Dino coupe on the policy. I have in the past added and dropped vehicles with only admin charges made of £15 apart from an M3 BMW which stuck a couple of hundred quid on it, this was reduced again when I sold the car. I made a claim 3 years ago (my first and only in my driving career) which was settled within 10 days with no hassle. I have 3 points on my license (this added £400, my own stupid fault too!). One of the cars is nominated for daily use and living outside (all the others must be garaged), they all have unlimited mileage and European breakdown recovery (used once and superb, we were on the next ferry after the one we should have been on just 2 hours later having had the water pump go on the motorway near Liege). The total agreed value of all of them is £58.5k. This lot costs me £1400 a year which I think is superb value and having personal experience of their payout and recovery service I cannot speak highly enough of them.

I also used to use Footman James until they got taken over a few years ago and they doubled their prices: glad to hear that are still good value so might get them to quote next year at renewal time.

This was for individual classic cars but I found their prices to be much almost double my current insurer.

Another vote for Hagerty...they always seem to take a genuine interest as everyone there I speak to seems to be a classic car enthusiast. Been with them for four years having moved from Footman James when their prices suddenly shot up. Insured three cars for less than the renewal premium of one with FJ!

I have also had to use the emergency breakdown cover which exceeded my expectations...recovery off the hard shoulder and delivery home on a Bank Holiday weekend.

From reading this thread it seems we have plenty of good insurers to choose from now.

Ignore Admiral. I was quoted competitively for a 3 car policy but when I wanted to add a fourth the quote was a long way from being competitive. I declined. It was something like £240 for a car I insured elsewhere for £93.
