As far as I know it's not a vast number. It depends on what you're looking at though because some electrical components will be the same across a large number of sixties and seventies cars thanks to Lucas.

Others may be along with a more in depth answer soon.

Thanks Will, I have lots of bits from my scrapped MGB sitting in the shed, but as I am moving to an mg midget I didn't want to sell anything I could use

although the Spridgets look very much the same throughout the years there are very many variations of parts over the years

save the parts until you get your Spridget

when, or better still before, you get a Spridget get a copy of the relevant Driver's Handbook as it'll tell you so much and if you read it and refer to it you'll know more than most Spridget owners even very long term owners

you can also get a paper copy of the original factory Parts Catalogue and factory Workshop Manual or all three on the less convenient DVD

Driver's Handbooks for prevention (and workshop manuals for repairs)
Driver's Handbook - http://www.mgocshop.co.uk/catalog/Online_Catalogue...

Parts Catalogues - http://www.mgocshop.co.uk/catalog/Online_Catalogue...

Workshop Manual - http://www.mgocshop.co.uk/catalog/Workshop_Manuals...

Can't give you the answer (but suspect it will be limited to a few electrical items) but a couple of thoughts are:

- Contact a specialist in both such as MGBHive.
- Get the relevant Moss catalogue for both and start comparing numbers for any part you suspect may be shared.

Good tip to get the Moss catalogues. They send them out free or you can do it online.

However it depends what sort of parts you have and how many. When I helped clear my grandfather's garages there were parts for at least five different models of MG and between my mum and I we ebayed all of it. It took too long to sort and a lot of it wasn't worth much or was still available from the owners club or Moss.
Apart from all the boxes of used spark plugs and blown bulbs... We binned them!

any info including from the web and forums (including and often especially mine) needs checking and cross referencing with other (reliable) sources, preferably two others

all databases have errors and suppliers catalogues often copy errors or contradict other suppliers catalogues and then you have equivalent replacement parts change of part numbers

the T*ss catalogue I can tell you for certain has errors and if you order the wrong part because of their cataloguing errors and even if you have exchanged a dozen or more emails with them before ordering the part the fault will be yours not T*ss or their 'er' managers

yes they do have downloadable pdf catalogues but bear in mind the need to cross reference

as has been said some original parts are worth saving, not electrical parts now as if you buy from the right places (not always the usual suppliers) they are fine - many rubber parts or parts with rubber in are still abysmal quality as are many newly made metal parts

as it tends to be very quiet around here, especially on Spridgets I'd suggest visiting the MG BBS Midget and Sprite forms and Archives for detailed info on Spridgets - http://www2.mg-cars.org.uk/cgi-bin/gen5?runprog=mg...

still relevant in principle is Paul's excellent MGB web site, mgb-stuff - http://www.mgb-stuff.org.uk/hometext.htm

and the excellent 200+ John Twist videos - http://www.youtube.com/user/Universitymotorsltd#g/...

Headlights, rear lights, rubber bumper front indicator lenses

Nuts and bolts.

Gauges to some degree.

Door catch plates.

Roadster hood catches and tonneau stick holders.

Dash switches (exception being plastic dash rubber bumper Bs which used dash switches more in common with Minis than Midgets).

That's really about it, suspension and brakes all different, engines, gearboxes, props, axles all different. Interiors all different as are all body panels.

Very little shared between the 2 cars.

Thanks guys that's a great amount of info

Although I have admired these cars for many years I've only got round to buying these 3 in the last year

It's a learning curve to say the least

Although I can say the best way to learn it by parting one out, you also meet a nice bunch of knowledgeable chaps in the progress !

most/many, not all, classic car owners have little or no idea how well their cars could or should go because they don't drive them enough and/or in the way they were designed to be driven and despite what they think they don't fully service, maintain or repair them and believe that all the cars of that model are that slow, poor handling and unreliable because they've not driven a good mechanical example to know the difference

one of the worst things about classic cars is past and present owners not looking after their classics enough and/or driving their classics enough, please don't be in that group as there's already too many of them

WO,
IIRC door plates come in early and later versions on the Spridgets (I don't know about on Bs)

Your quite correct Nigel, naturally the pull handle Bs use different catches too, but most Midgets and Bs that people buy are going to be the same.

Midgets were based on the A30 / A35, whereas the B was based on the Farina designed Morris Oxford / Austin Cambridge, if I remember correctly. So, no surprise they share relatively little.

Once BL got the hang of dipping into the parts bin, they loved it though, didn't they? Marina door handles, anyone? hehe
