Alfa Giulietta Spider advice
Discussion
I might be being offered one very cheap.. (12k) Tatty car but sound and with MOT. I've tried looking online but found surprisingly little on these cars. Does anyone have any advice on what to look for when I go and check it out ? Are there any buyers guides out there online? I've not found anything.
I've owned Alfas before so know rust will be the main thing to look for.

The pic shows a later Giulia Spider 101 Series 1600, the Giulietta Spider 750 series had the 1300cc Twin Cam and a less spohisticated drivetrain. The Giulietta had a chrome surrounded air intake on the bonnet just above the grille, consensus of opinion seems to be that the earlier 750 series cars feel much more 'vintage' to drive whereas the later cars have more of the feel of the 105 Series Giulia/Duetto Spider.
I have a Sprint. Lovely little cars that are lots of fun to drive and have a dedicated following.
Resources are the Giulietta Register, and for parts availability and prices in the uk take a look at Classicalfa.com and alfastop.co.uk.
Some mechanicals are interchangeable with later cars, but if you want to stay original then there are many detail differences. A 1300cc 105 engine has a number of differences to a 101, though more or less drops straight in. The 101 series cars came along in 59/60' earlier 750 cars have more differences.
At 12k with an MOT I guess you can't go far wrong, given a really smart spider is over 30k now.
My Sprint is a 'Normale' with 1300cc, a single downdraft carb and 4 speed box. It likes lots of revs, and I can drive the hell out of it without actually going very fast at all! It is more fun on a twisty back road than my later 105 series car.
These were the first volume produced Alfas, and wre built for the mass market, but still have an all alloy engine, wishbone suspension and huge finned Ali brake drums. They handle beautifully, and steer much better than a 105 car. Just not very fast unless you have a Veloce.
The picture is a Giulietta. The later 1600 Giulia has a hump in the bonnet. The Giulia Spider was the only factory RHD. Other RHD cars are conversions from Ruddspeed or Thomson and Taylor.

Timeless beauty.... Is just 2 words to describe these achingly pretty cars.....An itch that I sobvery nearly scratched in 1985......
My late / great friend Lt Colonel Tony Foley of Pindock Mews, Maida Vale,London, ( it was him and a pal who on Tomorrow's World were the first to use live ammunition on British TV, when they fired at point blank range at his pal Bill Wharton the Cheif Constable of Northumberland ) who was wearing a Bullitt proof vest ) ran a dark blue ( but originally white ) 64 B registered Guilia Spider through the late 60s until the early 1970s ( the last time he used it, was when he drove all the way back from the Cheviot Hills in Northumberland, pulled into his basement garage and never ran it again ) and loved it. His only complaint being that his one was one of the last drum brake models and when braking from cold it used to pull all over the place, he just couldnt get the brake balance right. But apart from that he had Nothing but praise for it.
If any one remembers this Spider ? I would love to hear from them. It was reputed to be an ex Targa Florio car, Tony sold it in circa 1986, it must surely be on the Alfa Guilia Register ?

Looks like its been prepped for touring or maybe some trials. Maybe that's why it's tatty.........body, scratches, dents and paint tatty, rather than rust tatty.
My missus just saw that over my shoulder said "oooooh can we have one of those, looks like it should have come from an old bond film". Told her we could swap it for my junior for the price that's going for........ But you had 1st dibs,

It is a Giulia Spider, so should be a 1600. Also one of the rare RHD cars.
By the looks of the other racey mods you might have a pair of dcoe webers under the bonnet and rather more poke than the standard solex.
Reproduce bumpers are being made I think, if you want them.
We'll done on the purchase, enjoy it.
Suggest joining the Giulietta register and the 750/101 group on yahoo.
