Learn how to restore a classic
Discussion
From my experience it was mucking around with cars as a 14/15 year old but that was 40 years ago so it was what you'd call classics these days. It was essential if I wanted my MGA or my brothers Healey to be ready to go out on a Saturday night! I'd suggest getting something simple to start on and enjoy it. Oh and you'll need a garage and mates to help!
We have all got to start somewhere and well done op for wanting to give it a go, if you have no prior experience you may be best to buy a running car and start with smaller jobs until your confidence and tool kit grow.
Also try to get something easy to work on with a good cheap parts supply like an MG of Triumph then if you do make a mistake buying a replacement part will not be a big problem or expense.

Go for something cheap, easy to work on and with good parts availability. Triumph Spitfire or MG Midget are two of the cars which normally get suggested at this point.
Don't get a complete basket case as you'll likely get frustrated with the lack of progress. Get something with tax and mot so you can enjoy it while fettling it. Start by giving it a bloody good servicing and drive it so you know what needs fixing.
Owners clubs can be a good source of help and advice as well as the Internet. Have you got any mates with interests in cars? It can be quite social if there's a couple of you.
Edit. What DPP said. Hadn't read that when I posted.
