I am the proud owner of a Mk1 Escort Mexico date of 1st reg is 01/01/1974. How can I find out when it was first built?

Look on the chassis plate, the last 2 letter before the number is the build date

Definitely 1973, so - yep - free tax this year.

Your chassis number will be BFATP*00*** which will indicate a 1973 build month, which month being with a P code you'll get from the table posted.

It will depend whether the car was originally a build to order for first customer or a sale from stock as to how many months before first registration it will be.

Many thanks for this information. My car was built in Oct 1973 so will be tax exempt from April.
