Hero type events

I quite fancy a go at a navigation rally type of thing, but all I can find in the UK are the Hero events and it seems I'd have to sell the car just to cover the entry fee. Is there anything along those lines that a man of modest means could partake of?

None of these events is particularly affordable, but I did the Three Castles the other year and it was an excellent introduction.
Specially designed as a toe in the water of proper regularity rallies, it is shorter (a long weekend rather than two weeks or whatever) and much cheaper than the longer, more ambitious events. I'd say it fulfilled that role pretty well. We certainly had fun and the atmosphere was great.

With respect James, that's rubbish, there are plenty of affordable navigation events for both classics and moderns. A single day historic navigation rally will cost around about £120.00 for which you would get half a dozen special tests and a bout 100 miles or so of regularities.
Have a look at the HRCR clubmans rally championship, the third round of which is tomorrow organised by ilkley motor club and based near Harrogate.
Even cheaper still would be a local motor club 12 car event, which woul typically be about 50 miles, run on an evening, costing less than a tenner.
