I am craving something of an oddity; a car with a piddling little capacity but with a plethora of pots.

The first thing that springs to mind is the EU/Italy/Spain market Ferrari 208 GT4 Dino - a 2000cc V8.

Is there much else out there?

For form's sake let's assume a token budget of under 30k as I know I could get a sub 2.0 V12 racing Ferrari etc.

Depends on the era. Didn't Mazda do a small capacity v6 in the early nineties? Porsche 91 something or other with a flat 6 (most were 4's perhaps)from the 60's/70's. Tatra, 2.4 v8 aircooled were they? Come to think of it Daimler v8 2.4. These may all be incorrect.

The Ferrari 208 is the best I can think of, too, at 250cc per cylinder. Turbocharged in some versions too. Triumph Vitesse 1600 but 6 isn't that many cylinders.

Honda made some 250cc race bikes in the 60s with 6 cylinders (and four cams, and 24 valves!)
and I think a 5 cylinder 125cc race bike, but I might have just made that up in my head. Guzzi did a v8 500 race bike too. And there are quite a few road bokes with 6 cylinders and about 1000 - 1300cc and 4 cylinders and 250cc.

I realise that none of this really helps!

Early '90s Mazda MX3 had a 1.8 litre V6.

Mitsubishi 6A10, 1.6 litre V6, available in the early '90s Mitsi Mirage:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitsubishi_6A1_engine

1947 Ferrari 125S - 1.5 litre V12. The Colombo V12 was also available in other small capacities, e.g: 2 litres in the 166 and 1.6 litres in the 212.

Can't think of any current small capacity multi-cylinder engines. I think emissions / fuel economy concerns have killed them off.

I have a good one for you, possibly in budget too

6 Pot 6 cylinner 2.0L in non turbo or twin turbo or supercharged variants & dead reliable too, a gem of an engine read

Can be found in a variety of 80/90's JDM Toyota's known as the 1G-GE N/A Variant or 1G-GTE turbo 1G-GZE Supercharged variant. Found in GZ20 Soarer's, GA-70 Supra's, GX-80-81 Cresta, Cressida & Chasers etc.

210bhp for the twin turbo's & all come in rwd flavour, possibly hard to find except for the Supra's of which are there always a few floating about.

In. Ter. Resting.

Thanks gents.

That Mazda 1800 V6 sounds fun, may have a look at that.

All my other cars are right at the other end of the scale.

BMW with 500cc pots
BMW with 585cc pots
Porsche with 625cc pots

Would quite like something with many little test tube like bangers smile

The Lamborghini Urraco came with a 2.5 litre V8; it should be cheaper than the 3.0 litre version too. In fact, I think they may have done a 2 litre Urracco, but LHD only!

A bit of Googling revealed that Lamborghini did make a 2 litre V8 Urraco - at 1994cc a whole 3cc bigger than the Ferrari!

I know a little bit about the Montreal.

This is what I know:

1) I need one more than I need my next breath.

2) They can be made into formidable rally cars.

3) They have a propensity, nay, a guarantee to st themselves with wallet raping ease.

Well, not necessarily. In 1985 I had the pleasure of completely rebuilding a Montreal V8 engine. The most complex, close tolerance engine I've ever worked on. Its built like a detuned F1 engine - just a bit tougher. I happen to know that it is still going strong, pulls like a train and is still happy to rev its proverbial nuts off and make the most glorious of sounds if called upon to do so.
So they can be reliable.........

Have you seen a Montreal in the metal? I stumbled across one for the first time at a small car show last year. I really REALLY wanted to love it, but up close and personal it was all a bit, well, disjointed? Like the designer tried a bit too hard and threw too many thoughts at one car?

Yes, I've rallied against 5 different ones, 4 in Europe and one here in the UK.

I'm a bit of a magpie so quite like the mindless Halfords-esque tat grafted onto nearly every surface smile

Something that small that sounds that good can only win in my book.

Also it delivers when someone asks, "oh, you rally old cars. An Alfa you say, is it a 105?"

"NO." one replies, "it's a Montreal".

Win.
