i need some help choosing a car for my son. He's 15 at the moment but he wants to be a mechanical engineer so i thought no better way to practise then get him used to the nuts and bolts on a car so i said to him if he wanted to restore a car with me and he agreed to the idea. Now i want it to last roughly 2-3 years making it that when we finish he will be bale to drive it. That comes onto the question "What car?" now I've been looking and he says he doesn't really want a mini or Land rover. So that made me come here. This is what he is looking for:
fast but not to fast it makes the insurance expensive
doesn't have to go fast just, so it looks fast
something which won't make him look like his family are still in the 60's
and he's thinking of putting chrome bumpers
respray the original colour to something on a rally car
rally lights
(his uncle has a lot of rally cars and races them, so thats where he gets his inspiration from)
he also likes the look of Porsche but i didn't know about the engine as my wife had one and she said it broke down a lot
i thought of the Triumph spitfire,Triumph stag,Ford escort mexico,Triumph GT6 Mk3,Fiat 500L (but with this he said he couldn't make it "rally")
if you can help me out that would be great

if you want to do it on the cheap and keep it mechanically simple a metro and fit a 6r4 body kit
then if your feeling brave you can shove an alfa V6 in the back

That is quite a good budget! What cars does his uncle have? It could be handy for spares/shared knowledge.
Is the idea to make it look like a rally car? Or to be an actual rally car? Why not look at what sort of cars are at local rally events and make a car to enter the event in?
The 500L can look pretty racy in Abarth form.
My choice would be a Land Rover.

citroen rally car
3 porsche's
1 from 1970's
1 from 1980's and new porsche GT3 RS
he wants it to look like a rally car but i said to him we could get ( for example ) a escort Mk2 and make it look like one and then when he's older and insurance is a bit cheaper then we can add parts which will make it more of a rally car !!!
A Ginetta G15 could be ideal. Quick, agile, easy to work on, small, appreciating, rare, cool, etc

Does he want to be a mechanical engineer or a mechanic? Two totally different things, like trying to help someone become a chef by getting them to wash the dishes.Gassing Station | Classic Cars and Yesterday's Heroes | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
