Switchgear question for Leyland gurus ;)

From 81-85 Rangies used a particular type of switch:



No, my assumption is that it is very unlikely that this switch type was made and used solely in the Range Rover but would have been taken from, or found in, other Leyland cars of the era.

I would be very grateful if anyone can steer me in the direction of the other cars that used these switches or if they are available re-manufactured.

I would guess that your vehicle would have a Lucas switch fitted originally, which if you remove it from the fascia, should have a 5 digit number (begining with a 3****) followed by a single letter, stamped on the side of the part.

If you then type 'Lucas' followed by the 5 digit number into a search engine, you should find the whereabouts of any replacements.

Thanks but they were only ever fitted on the MY85 cars so I don't have a reference to work to. It's going to be easier to source them from another Leyland car if they were used in one as there are likely to be more of them about.

Yup. Those are the three position and I don't think they have a light. There is a rear heated window one which I think has a light but I can't find it.

If memory serves, the Princess ones were illuminated by multiple fibre optics leading back to a single bulbholder stuffed up behind the dash. It didn't fit properly and used to fall out.

Yes, if that lower section contains a bulb? I've not been able to establish that.

That would make sense. They have a small hole where a fibre optic would fit. Too much of a faff for me.

My Esprit S2 has these including the fibre optic illumination. Never worked, the bulb lit up no problem but so little light came out of the end of the fibre optic "pipe" that the very faint glow it gave to the switch was only visible in absolute pitch dark.

Ah, British automotice engineering in the 1970's

My Triumph 2.5PI has a dimmer for the dash lights - God knows why as even on max/cut out of the circuit you can hardly see them. And as for the 'night dimming relay' in the boot that dims the brake lights when you put the side lights on so you don't dazzel cars behind...!

They were also used by those other masters of the parts bin free for all - Reliant.

These were used on the SE6 on Scimitars. They 'solved' the illumination issue by attaching a bulb on a clip which positioned the bulb
behind the symbol. Which means that as the switch clicks in from the front it can't be fitted until after the switch is located in the dash...

They also used to pass 240w of main beam headlights through the light switch too, though I suspect they may not have been alone in that feature. Frying tonight...
