Hi chaps, quick question. I have a doner car which I've tacken everything of value off, it's literally just the shell, doors, glass and loom. I need to tow it away to be scrapped at a proper place to can give me a certificate of destruction etc. Do I pay them? I know scrapyards normally pay me but because I've taken everything from it theres not much left for them apart from half a ton of steel! Thanks

Wow! It was a very sensible and pertinent reply. And exactly what you should do.

Clueless is correct.

If you take it in, I see no problem with them weighing it up for you. Do you really need a certificate of destruction or can you just tick 'Dismantled by myself' on the V5? Or, just SORN it and take it to any scrappy.

No, you're right, this was stupid advice. Definitely do not ring a scrapyard because they will rip you off.

I'll be happy to remove the shell for you at mates rates. I'll only charge you £1500.

Weighed in worth about £60-80 a tonne.

Given all that is left you will be lucky if it worth £30.

You might find a scrapper who will collect it for no cash either way.

Bringing this thread back on an even keel
I have a car that no one wants, even the scrappy
I have to keep SORNing it every year, can I not just tell DVLA it is no more and let that be an end to it?

Ok thank you, I have no problem paying them if I have to, as need it off the drive but I don't want to get fleeced which is why I posted this thread to get a rough idea - for some reason I got sarcasm.

Regarding scrapping and the DVLA, due to the EU environmental legislation you have to get a 'certificate of destruction' from an approved vehicle dismantler, you can't just weigh it in and tell the DVLA it's been scrapped any more. The alternative, as mentioned is SORNing it every year for the rest of your life!

If you tell me where you live, I'll give you a lovely Volvo free (and another car in a poor state of repair too)
They're free, totally free, just give me your address......

any scrap man or yard can take the shell, if you have the logbook, fill in the yellow part, get them to sign as well.send the v5 in yourself to the dvla, job done.as scrap is about £100 a ton you may get £20-£40 or they will remove for free.

Mark it as exported, return paperwork to DVLA, ring scrapyard to come and collect, make cup of tea, relax, job done
