Registration Number Application

I bought a partialy restored car that has been imported from the US. Does anyone know if I have to have the vehicle finished and MOT-able before I apply for a registration number or can I apply for a number before that?

you now require to do the following

a valid MOT certificate
valid insurrance using the VIN chassis number
fill in a V55 form
photocopy your passport
the original pink chit (US version of a V5)
cheque for £55
NOVA number and HMRC import paperwork

send all this off by registered post to the DVLA, do not sent through normal post as if any of the paperwork goes missing, mega hassle occurs

Keep a copy of EVERYTHING you send to DVLA

Yep, amongst of the requirements for registering is to have an MOT and insurance on it, and to pay for tax if it's not free.

You need to get the HMRC NOVA certificate as soon as it's imported, though.

Thank you all for that excellent information, it's a 1955 car, so I'll need to find an MOT station when it's complete that understand the MOT requirements for older cars.

Yep - even though it's pre-60, so MOT exempt going on, you'll definitely need an MOT to register it.

Or do what I ended up doing (although it was many years ago when local offices still existed).

I couldn't get hold of any importation documents for a US 1967 GT6. Eventually I sent a friend down to the local office with MOT, insurance and UK build date certificate. No mention made about car being imported - as it had no registration number it was given a local age related plate.

This was six months after trying to register it as an import and getting nowhere.

If the car is UK built I wouldn't let on the car has ever been out of the country.

That's very interesting.
It's a 1955 Aston Martin DB2/4, but LHD. I have a copy of the original build sheet
From reading the information on that link it suggests that I can get a reg number before the restoration is finished?
