I'm thining about building a Capri or a Sierra, to race, I want to use a quad cam engine from the Scorpio. To do this I need to 'show' that either the Essex or the Cologne block was run pre 1989 with a quad cam, (I know this will not be the Scorpio quad cam) under the series rule I could then run the latter Scorpio unit.
I've looked around and found the Wetlake heads on the R2600, but these were not quad cam.
The Sierra with the scorpian engine could be a very competitve car if I can use it. The rules require I can not increase the number of valves or cams from those used pre 89, but heads cams and valve are free, so my reading is I can use the 'latter' Scorpian ones.
Not a Uk series so please don't tell me I'm miss quoting the rules
Thanks for any advice, links etc

The development Cosworth did on the Cologne engine involved converting it from a single-cam pushrod engine to an OHC design. The extensive nature of the work means I'd be amazed if anyone had done it previously - that idea might be a non-starter I'm afraid.
There was a tuning firm (In Salisbury IIRC) that did a 3.7 version of the Cologne - that was supposed to be a bit quick.

Interested to know why you're not following the trusted Pinto route. Perhaps mix in some Warrior or similar?
This, for me the only Capri's are V6 ones, I don't like S4 ones, I don't like V8 ones, but if its purely for the track, then the V6 in any form is a heavy engine, you would get similar power and better handling out of a Pinto based engine.Sutol2 said:
Does the Cosworth GAA not fit the bill? Quad cam and based on the Essex block
The GA was quad cam, but although Ford said it was built on selected Essex blocks, it wasn't, the whole engine was a special. You need to speak to Ric Wood of Ric Wood motorsport (if you google it or Cosworth GA you'll find him) if you want to go this route, I believe he is reproducing GA,s.
ETA - he's also raced Capris for a long long time.

Does the engine have to have been a production engine installed pre-89?I've looked around and found the Wetlake heads on the R2600, but these were not quad cam.

If not then the Cosworth GAA V6 which was DOHC-24v was 'homologated' for use in the racing RS3100's in Grp2 racing in the early 70's.

Can you explain that bit again?Yes Dave's explanation is my understanding, and the gaa is the engine I was looking for, but it used the Essex block, while the scorpion cosworth was on the cologne block, may be stretching the rules too far to try to claim I can use the scorpion engine, when it is not on the 'homologated' Essex block

That's not what you asked (stated) in your original post though.....?Aero pilot, I know that's not what I originally said, I was hoping someone could suggest a cologne based engine, but from the answers it looks like the Essex was the only quad valve that was pre 88. I was looking for an economic way to power under the rules I can run 1000kg for 2700cc, so a 2.8 cologne would run around 1075kg very easy to do, a pinto at say 2.1 needs to be very light to be competitive. Any thanks to everyone for the input.

Is there a link to the regs? Pinto can generally make higher bhp more reliably than Cologne. Can you use a YB engine?Gassing Station | Classic Cars and Yesterday's Heroes | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
