Recently, I've bought a nice 60's kit car, an Ashley 1172. It’s powered by a ford 100E side-valve and after looking at some of the figures, I've decided it needs some more power.

Looking around, I have found out that changing to a twin HS2 set up can get about 60hp out of it, but I want that little more than that.

I know that the compression ratio is quite low, 8:1, and that's low enough to turbo it without blowing seals out and want to know if anyone has ever done that.

If I were to turbo it, I'd either go with a small, low down, torque fill turbo or I'd go for a medium sized one for a kick in the mid-range.

The rest of the car is getting overhauled to suit, with a Ford Anglia rear axle ( if I can find one), Anglia gearbox, Anglia front hubs and wire wheels all round (hopefully) and maybe a Hillman Imp steering rack if it fits to change it to rack and pinion

Thanks for any advice

As an engine that was designed before the war and built very much on a budget, I can't imagine it will last very long with a turbo bolted on. I would have thought you'd be better of inserting either a pre-x/flow or a x/flow in there. I know it's been done many times and it's a cliche, but there's probably a good reason for that IYKNWIM.

There was a recent red Ashley at auction. Somewhere like Bath, certainly West Country. Wondered if this might be it.

Supercharger would be more 'period correct' and probably more fun all round.

Not really, sorry. Its not in the best of conditions and I don't really have any.

To Magic919, it is that one. someone bought it and i bought it off of him.

And to larrylamb11, i thought about using a supercharger but i just cant find one for this engine so a turbo is, in my mind, a wee bit better. although the super provides better torque throughout the range, a turbo is using waste energy so its more efficient, and on a engine with already low power, using something to sap more away from it might prove problematic

Yeah, thats it. im trying to resto-mod it back to better health.

Shell ain't too bad of a condition, same cant be said for the frame. Surface rust just turning to structural rust everywhere. engine turns freely but clutch is stuck on i think and in gear.

So, turbo 100E, is it a good idea?

"Turbo" would not be "period correct" as advised above. If being "period correct" on your classic car is not important to you, then just fit an efficient, modern engine. Choose one that will give you the performance you want.

Or don't.

Yes, a 440 should do nicely, and be almost a period modification !

A Willment 100e would be period ..

.......or perhaps you could go for TR4 front suspension engine gearbox and back axle ?
