I am reading, and enjoying greatly, an older book entitled ' The International GRAND PRIX book of MOTOR RACING. It was published in the early 1960's and features articles written by Graham Hill, Jim Clark, Enzo Ferrari, Jack Brabham, Stirling Moss and many other noteables of the era.
Its full of fascinating snippits of information that I had never heard before and some superb (balck and white) pictures also.
One article on early grand prix racing, when a riding mechanic was still required, states that as the governing body had banned the fitment of 'motor horns' it became normal practice for the riding mechanic to fill his pockets with used spark plugs prior to the start. Then during the race, should they catch up with a slower car, he would throw the used plugs at the car in front to indicate their presence and intention to overtake!!!!
Who knew?? I had never heard of this before, makes failing to spot a blue flag seem unforgivable!
