Nippers and Classics

Quite an unusual child I have

Number 3 of 4 just started learning to drive, refreshingly he has zero interest in modern cars.

We bought a new Audi A3 FSIETPDE ? for him to learn in but his number one choice for sunny yesterday was this



I can't say I blame him

He drove this faultlessly yesterday ginning from ear to ear. The car even introduced him to the downside of classic motoring when we broke down and had to push it to safety. Lose wire on the fuel pump and we were off again.

Anyone else got youngsters with great taste?

What's the insurance like?
Number one son is 17 later this year and fancies a mini (not one of them giant BMW maxis things) but quite likes a few classics.

Very good. Here is me back in the late 90s with my first car.

That's a big old car to learn to drive in.....very cool though.

Safety is a big concern in modern driving, that's my only issue.

Insurance wise he's a lucky boy as he's covered on mine on certain cars inc the Audi which is a group 24, his old 73 Alfa and a Volvo 240.

Wouldn't have thought a Mini would be an issue

My two boys started at the Under Seventeen Car Club at ages 13 and 15. Car had to have a manual gearbox, so for the first year they both learned on my Gordon-Keeble!

I learnt to drive in an awful 80s Micra, but my first car was considerably older than me!



I turned 18 in 1991 so the Cortina was already 24 at the point I bought it, from the widow of the original owner!

My son is not quite 5 but if he finds himself attending PH worthy events and enjoying them I wouldn't discourage him from following a similar path of older, more interesting, car ownership. That's assuming we're not all 'driving' glorified golf buggies while reading a kindle by the time he reaches driving age, but that's for a different thread!

Never had a go in an Elan - been a passenger and that was fun

My first car was a Triumph Spitfire as it was the closest thing to an Elan (Dad had one) that I could afford. £450ish insurance when I was 20, then about £140 when I was 21.

We start them early in the Benjj household too.

I took them all rallying in the DS to France a couple of years ago. Youngest was 2 months old at the time, my wife was breast feeding her at the time controls and they all loved it doing full 4-wheel jumps over French country bridges...







Last year and friend and I took my old BMW and his old Porsche down to the French/Spanish border for a couple of week's R&R en famille. They loved that.







And my eldest always enjoys a bit of Blomqvist action in the rally Porsche on the school run.
