V5: Date of FIRST registration wrong?...
Discussion
I recently checked through my V5 document for my 1965 Tiger and the Date of first registrationthe is stated as 04 04 1979, with a note under special notes section: car declared manufactured in 1965 (correct).
This is different from the Date of original registartion of 19 03 1965,
shown on the original RF60 registration log (that i have a photocopy of) - which has a last change of ownership, to my Father, listed as dec 1974.
The car's never been exported/imported or badly damaged/insurance-claimed/etc as far as i know during my ownership and Father's before.
Can anyone explaing why the Date of first registration might have been changed, possibly between 1974 and 1979?
The car may have 'been taken off the road' a few times in the 70s due to my Father being away at sea for up to 6 months - was there a SORN procedure then or did a car have to be re-registered to get it back on the road or???
Many thanks!

DVLA publish a list of the clubs who's dating authority they recognise.

I suggest you follow up with a club archivist to provide you with a letter to confirm the correct date and provide this to DVLA along with a copy of the original log book and I'm sure they will then correct the V5 for you.
Not only is it worth doing to get the records straight but it will also mean you will then correctly fall within threshold for exemption on VED.

Thanks chaps and Stiff, for the VED mention too... The tax renewal comes through correct each year- historic class vehicle- tax exempt.
A V888 Request for information form has gone off to DVLA for an explaination...really hoping i don't get a 'no explaination available response. If so, i will be requesting correction because it is now stalling the car's sale...

It will anyway - the manufacture date is known to DVLA.I'm not sure you could get it "corrected". The "first reg" date is the date the UK's contiguous record was originated. The original first reg date is known, and is on the record already.

That's just one potential buyer being a bit funny. It really doesn't make any tangible difference at all.Look, if it's really a problem, I'll have it from you. We might need to discuss the price, of course, but I'd be VERY happy to give it a home...

Yes, i agree, all the correct chassis and reg plate #s and dates (first reg and changes of ownerships) are on the RF60 (orig log book), which i've got a fairly clear copy of (but....it is only a photocopy...)
It is possible to get registration data corrected with DVLA, I got a chassis number put right where even the local authority mis-read dodgy handwriting in the 50s!
But don't expect quick service, my nice simple letter took 3 months to work through the system before a corrected V5c was issued. About 10 years ago, and I did expect them to want to inspect the car (they didn't), but goodness knows what they'd do now if they did with no local offices.

Has the registration number been changed at any point in the cars history? I was talking to someone with a sixties HA Viva, which had the original number removed in the eighties and now shows a first registration date from then, with the same note "declared manufactured 196x" on the V5.
It is possible....between the last change of ownership date of 3-12-74 (shown on the RF60 original log book, which states the same Reg plate # as the car has now) and 1979, which the current V5 (issued in 2004) shows as the date of first registration.....
.....but i'd think very unlikely.
I spose...it's possible that all the plates from the RF60 Car could have been transferred to another car of same type and manufacture year just before the 1979 date ..

My E-type had the wrong registration date due to me not putting it on the computer in 1983. But a quick letter with a copy of the heritage certificate and the V5 saw it changed to the correct date of October 1961. As aforesaid, quite a common problem and a build confirmation date from the club or existing records will rectify the problem.
Have a similar situation with one of my Escorts. Was built in 1970 but according to the V5 it has date of first registration as 1978. From talking to the second owner of the car I was led to believe that this was a "bit of a fiddle" to extend the homologation life of the car as it was being used for international rallies at the time.....so it sounds like this kind of situation is not at all uncommon !
Doesn't have any bearing on the VED/Historic status though as that is based on build date rather than registration date.
I also have a 1963 AH3000 which spent the first couple of years of its life in Germany before coming back to the UK. Seems that at that time the DVLA didn't worry about age related plates (as they do now) as they issued it a nice new 1965 C plate which was then current.

Spent 4 years in South Africa as a kid, coming back to the UK in 1971. We brought back Mum's 1960 Anglia 105E (it was built as an export model for SA) which got registered on a J-plate - TBM 143J.I inherited it in 1976 when I passed my test. No problem locally as plod knew the car, but I got so much grief from the police when further afield (most assumed I'd just nicked the car and a set of plates off another car
) that I used to carry a copy of the registration document with me!Gassing Station | Classic Cars and Yesterday's Heroes | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
