It's not often that I am stumped by a car but I ran into this in the Sainsbuys car park in Croydon today, can you guess what it is?

That would be my guess as well, Mk1 Cortina with a German frock. (Or maybe it's the other way round!)

Yes it's clearly a Taunus but I too am surprised by the 3 stud wheels.

Yep you are right its a 1967 Taunus which is apparently based on a Ford Cotina. But here is the odd thing its a Ford V4 and its FWD. The engine sits ahead of the front axel. Acoording to the owner he thinks its currently the only one on the road in England at the moment, but apparently 30 have been registered in the UK over the years

I don't think the Taunus was based on the Cortina. It was from the time when Ford Germany and Ford GB were run like separate companies with no real component sharing. Possibly the first significant bit of sharing was when Ford GB started to put the (dreaded) V4 engine in the Corsair.

The centre passenger compartment certainly looks like MK1 Cortina but is that definately a genuine unmodified car, header tank cooling system and bulkead mounted rack and pinion steering in a 1967 Ford?.

my Dad had one of these when based in Osnabruck in the early seventies. Brought it back to the UK and swapped it for a Mk1 Escort with another Squaddie going in the opposite direction.................not literally you understand, no chance meeting at the A2 services, but you know what i mean......

Agree with your first point; the Taunus was fwd with the engine ahead of the front axle, Cortinas were always rwd.

But the Taunus V4 engine was not shared with the Corsair, it was 4-cyl version of the 'Cologne' V6 whereas the Corsair's was a 4-cyl version of the 'Essex'.

I think the German engines were first used in 'British' Fords in the Mk2 Granada and Capri 2.8i

Mk 2 Granada was when it all started to go wrong for Ford UK, German engine and production moved out of the U.K.
The MK3 Cortina was the first collaboration I think.
