Rustproofing Advice Request,

one for the bodywork experts please.

i have recently had new floors and inner & outer cills fitted to my XJ coupe and am keen to fit the carpets this week. Could anyone please advise on products and procedures for the inside treatment of the bare metal, primers/topcoat etc.
i also need to do the underside of the car and again would appreciate a point in the right direction.

PS outer cills have been painted to finish by the body shop.

Waxoil will certainly work on new steel it needs to be warmed up first. One issue not always considered is how these chemicals smell inside your car on a hot day?

Waxoil smells ok imo anyway. It's easily available and definitely works. Wether it's still the best is up for debate, Bilt Hamber are a contender and rated well in recent test's. Outcomes are probably down to the skill and perseverance of the person doing the job.

I don't know if anybody else has considered these products from a odour point of view?

i have some red oxide primer for the inside, would a couple of coats of this work, bearing in mind there will be underlay and carpet, or would you think something more substantial?

For a car as nice as yours. I'd be tempted to use something like this for the floors:

Heres the floor pans i fitted to my coupe back in 2007 ish,yes i red oxioded mine but first wire brushed all the mig welds to stop the rust from starting again,not many people do that but you should .then used a sikoflex type of sealer to seal all the joints before glueing down the carpets.then enjecting wax oil and engine oil in to the sills and seat cross members.

personally I blast with crushed glass then epoxy prime within 2hours, let dry then brush-able seam sealer where needed, filler(show quality) then 3 coats of anti-stonechip ,not a lot changes by brand but Shultz is for inside not exterior, bedliner is top shelf but usually overkill

red-oxide is/becomes porous, epoxy doesn't so its what I use

Galvafroid is expensive, but it is THE anti-corrosion paint, I have used it many times,and can vouch for its rust killing and weathering abilities.

I've used smooth Hammerite for years. That's what I would use for the inside of the car, and outside, more of the same followed by Dinitrol. I wouldn't use Dinitrol in the box sections though. Yes it works, but it absolutely stinks and the smell lingers for months. Clear Waxoyl may be a better bet.
