I made a replacement door card today.
I made it from hard board as was the one that came off the car.

Any idea what it is best to seal it with to stop it absorbing moisture?

I use hardwoods so never tried it on hardboard, but can't see a problem.

There was a sheet of plastic on the old one that I intend to replace but car is a convertible so as far as damp is concerned, the inside is always outside if you see what I mean.

I think the sheet is there to prevent drips from the weather strip landing on the board.

Having had a look on the 'net, there isn't much info out there.
There are a few comments on how even using water based sealers can warp the board. What a pain.

I was hoping that something available at a DIY store or similar would do the job to cut down on the hassle and so I can get it sorted today if possible.

I know it would be a bit outragious but would an external varnish do the trick?

It's rare for door panels to be sealed, but if so, you may find it easier to use a spray-on acrylic sealer as it's more flexible than most others. Also, some other types are not good at retaining adhesive spray used when fitting the final panel material/leather.

I'm at the outlaws today and so I have been to their local small dig shop where father outlaw happens to work.

I have bought some Ronseal Yatch varnish. I say bought, he let me have it for free.

Do you think it will do the trick?

Well, the first coat is on. It soaked it up like a sponge.
Will report back (if anyone cares ) tomorrow.

I would personally skip the varnish and wrap it in adhesive plastic sheet, the equivalent of laminating it. Provided you seal around the edges, that will prevent any ingress.

I made some doorcards a few years ago out of 'tempered' hardboard which is water resistant. I remember having to visit three or four building suppliers in Sheffield before I found one that stocked it but have just found it on Ebay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hardboard-4mm-Sheets-x3-...

I didn't know that tempered hardboard existed until I was knee deep in the project so it was a little too late.

The board has now finally dried and looks good (not that it matters). The vinyl is back on and it will go back in the car in the morning....hopefully.

Time will now tell.
