Which classic car auction

Hi all

I am considering selling one or two of my classic cars to make some space. Having only ever been a buyer I am after some thoughts on the best classic car auctions to use.

SWVA seems to be my closest and runs 4 times a year,, I saw the thread about Anglia car auctions and they seem to have a good range at theirs today.

Any experience or thoughts on decent auctions to look at?

Brightwells in Leominster seem to have a good range of stuff, and I know they bring cars in from all over the country.

I guess the question has to be which auction is selling most, for the best price ranges, in the kind of market segment that your car's in. No point in putting a mediocre MGB into a high-glitz high-end auction, no point in putting a concours 250GTO into the nearest £5k-average merchants.

It depends on the type of car, target market etc etc. My guess would be SWVA will have plenty of trade interest but limited private interest, they don't exactly market very heavily. East Anglia has good coverage but a bit of a reputation for rather er "average" stuff but lots of variety.

Look at sale %'s, commissions and market coverage. I think H&H would be worth a look, I know one of the specialists and have done for many years, I'd have no hesitation in recommending him.

If you're near SWVA you've also got Charterhouse and DVCA to weigh up....

Why you thinking of using an auction house to sell one of your cars,all the good stuff sells privatly and you don,t have to pay at least 15% plus vat for the privalage.

EA, H&H and SWVA are 7, 5 and 6% plus vat respectively. H&H also charge £50 to enter it which I would consider a fair exchange for their global exposure and catalogue mailshot that will increase exposure.

A cost certainly, but the prices achieved at auction for a lot of stuff look close to retail to me, I doubt the price privately would be higher.

Plus you don't have to entertain the dreamers, who seem to be present at every price point.
