So I have a Daimler Sovereign series 1 2.8 auto. The AED is missing, the car has an LPG conversion the tank for which lives in the spare wheel well.

I can start the car from cold on gas and its fine as the gas tends not to condense on the cold manifold walls. I can't start the car from cold on petrol with no choke, unless I squirt easy start up the intake.

Options are

1. Do nothing, carry running on gas. All feels a bit rubbish, the gas install was DIY and looks a bit shonky.

2. Fixing the AED - given their reputation this seems daft.

3. Fit manual choke - its ok, but a bit of a fiddle, some learning, time consuming and I still have a poverty spec no go 2.8.

4. Fit a 4.2 from a S3 with the fuel injection, the tanks and the longer diff. This seems like the best plan. Buy a rusty S3. But the devil is in the detail, making the tacho work, fuel lines and returns and switching between tank, senders and gauges. I also wonder about the box and exhaust, how easy is it?

Food for thought.

Another option Ben. You might want to consider saving yourself time, heartache and (in all probability) money by buying a S3 such as this http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C653414 ?

Your 2.8 may have some value as a parts car which you can put towards the cost of its replacement?

I don't want an S3, just want an injected 4.2. I hate carbs they smell of wee.

A chevy driveline woudl be a laugh, but too big a job.

A S3 transplant should be very easy.

Huntsman, I've given your dilemma some thought since reading your post this morning - I would make the best of what you have without taking on a huge amount of work. Keep it as original as possible & sell it on for a decent return, it really sounds like you're not happy with it at all? frown

The hidden costs would probably add up to more than buying another car nearer to what you require.
Some insurance companies get very sniffy about modified older cars .
Putting a full fat 4.2 injection motor in place of a tired 2.8 would show how knackered all the other components are .

Where on earth do yo buy your petrol Dan? If your carbs are set up properly you should have no smell whatever from your engine. Buy the bloody Rover carbs and send the lot up to me and I'll rebuild them for you and you can enjoy your motor without spending a fortune on it.

An S3 transplant is a huge task: it's not as simple as dropping in the engine, that's the easy bit. Dealing with the electronics and fuel delivery is an extremely complex task, believe me.

A properly set up 2.8 is a joy to drive and is silky smooth, much smoother than the 4.2 as it's a short stroke engine, and very economical.

If you're determined to get rid of the carbs I can modify your engine to run on Megasquirt injection, which is fully programmable and totally reliable. Have a think about that.

I'm on it.

I get the point about the 2.8, but the short diff makes it a bit busy, was doing nearly 5k rpm when I drove it home at 90.
