Does anyone know if this is a genuine news story, because I just find it ridiculous. A retired plasterer, living in a council house, who has a 2+2 E Type V12, Rolls Royce Shadow II, a Daimler Dart, and a TR8 in his collection?. According to article, the owner was offered £105,000 for the e type 20 years ago. Yeah right. I suspect its to deliberately wind people up and just completely made up, or greatly exaggerated and missing out facts.

If it is, he should have his council house taken away, he has the means to pay his own way in life and buy a house, just sell a car or 2.

What I find ridiculous the most is the £105,000 he was offered, but turned it down. No way is a V12 2+2 E Type worth 100k. Where they fetching money like that in the early 90s?.

E types were fetching big money back before the crash. Not so much the Series 3, but it's probably Chinese whispers.

Maurice bought the council house. I personally know Maurice and am a member of his Motor Club. A thoroughly nice gentleman who owns some concourse cars.

Plus council houses are just houses owned by the council and let to tenants. They have never been means-tested, just houses tenants rent from a public, rather than private landlord.

The plasterer who skimmed our en suite has a 90's Virage....

He had bought an Aston years back and every now and again would trade up seemingly when the time was right

Well done to the irresponsible reporter then smile

I know council houses aren't means tested but there aren't enough so councils end up paying huge rents to private landlords.

He can keep his lovely collection!!!

I'll bet he would be really pleased that you have been so magnanimous in your 'decision' to allow him to keep his cars!

Obviously nothing to do with you, as you then blame others for the way it was reported, rather than apologise for your spiteful comments!

So you know when he bought his council house do you?

You know for a fact that he bought it in recent times when council houses were suddenly in short supply rather than back in the 70's or 80's when there were plenty of council houses available?

Or is it your thinking that, regardless of how long he's lived in his council house, or when he actually bought it, he should never have been given the right to buy his council house?

The journalist has mentioned the fact that he lives an "Unassuming council house" because council houses were never built to look flash or expensive, they were "ten a penny" homes crammed together on estates, and more often than not, if you lived on a council estate then there was a bit of a stigma attached to it and you were looked down upon by those who lived elsewhere. They weren't (and still aren't) the sort of homes where you would expect to find a collection of expensive classic cars.

This guy's just an ordinary bloke, who lives in an ordinary house, who's spent his hard earned money on a classic car collection, and you think it's some sort of disgrace because he's had the cheek to buy his council house? - You really don't come out of this very well at all!

I still stand by my original comment, had the author called it an "ex council house" no comment would have been made.

This is not the area to discuss whether I believe someone actually living in a council provided property should have 4 valuable classic cars as it is not the case.

Well where is the place, because you obviously have no clue and are being a total idiot.

I'll give you a clue!!! No council houses are provided property. People rent them. Some of these people might get money from other Government agencies in the way of housing benefit or other benefits. However many tenants pay full rent in exactly the same way you would in the private sector.

Pricing of the rent will vary on many things, but ultimately may not be massively different to many private rental areas. And as a rule council houses will be completely unfurnished (including paint and carpets) and the tenant is responsible for more of the upkeep than you'd get with a private rental.

So if you want a sensible discussion on this, I'm all for it. But please try and at least get some facts, rather than total made up bullst.

How many valuable classic cars is it OK for someone living in a council provided property to own?

Well, back on topic I think he's done well by focussing on some good examples of the less favoured 'classics' – it's a nice collection.

The guy has a nose for an investment, all the cars mentioned could be had for very reasonable prices in the past .

A decent plasterer can earn good money on day rates, and during the last few building booms they could clean up if they worked hard, hence Enfield's obnoxious Loadsamoney; there's no reason he couldn't have accumulated this collection of cars, especially if he bought when the prices were bottoming out. Shadows are still cheap as chips, 2+2 E types were worth buttons during the 90s, Darts only started getting telephone numbers in the last 10 years, likewise TR8s.
