Fuel pump flow rate

Dug out the Austin Sprite last week and it seems to have developed a misfire when under load. I'm thinking its a starvation problem so i measured the output at the carbs and it was 0.8 litres per minute. Is that enough? I'm wondering if that is causing the starvation issue? Any ideas?

800cc/min sounds like plenty to me, such a small, low-revving engine will probably only be using around half that.

When I had a misfire under load, it turned out that one of my spark leads had disintegrated at the join to the distributor. I don't know why that would cause a misfire under load only [you would have thought it would be constant] but it was definitely the cause of the problem.

Fuel starvation would cause the engine to fade then pick up again as you lift off the accelerator allowing the carb to fill up again.

One other easy thing to go check is that the SU float needles aren't sticking.

We had odd symptoms that looked like ignition. Under light load the floats allowed the bowls to fill up enough to run fine ... under heavy load one float needle didn't let enough fuel through and we had a "misfire".

For us it was only one float so the engine ran ok on two and coughed on the other two under load ...

Condenser or coil breakdown could also cause a misfire, fuel flow rate would be fine at 0.8l/min.

800cc / minute would be a fuel consumption of 10.5 gallons an hour, and I can't see any Sprite using that amount unless you somehow stuffed a supercharged V8 in there. What's your top speed, about 80 mph? It's got to be doing better than 8mpg flat out, which is what 10 gph would be at that speed.
