I recently acquired a 1996 XJ12 which I'm slowly restoring (or rather paying others to restore it for me smile ). Next week it's going in for a full body respray. After that, I was thinking of getting the underside fully rust treated undersealed. I have found these chaps called Rustbuster who aren't too far from me (about 60 miles):

http://www.rust.co.uk/

Has anybody used their services and knows how good their work is? The service I'm thinking of is their full Hot Frog Rustproofing Process as copied and pasted below. Does it sound good for about £500-550? If you have any other recommendations, I'm in Northamptonshire but I don't mind travelling to get to a reliable workshop. Thanks.

1 Mossmatic high pressure steam clean to vehicle underside using fresh water and
Rustbuster Chlor-X salt removing solution. We do not clean the engine.
2 Hand drying via high volume low pressure air and infra-red heat lamps when necessary.
3 Removal of plastic arch inner guards and front engine trays. Heat shields will not be
removed. Body styling panels to door bottoms, skirts, splitters wings or bumpers will not
be removed unless specifically requested to do so, this extra work will be subject to our
hourly rate.
4 Masking off of brakes backing plates and hubs, these will not be coated in the process.
5 Removal of any layered rust and failing coatings back to a sound surface. Surface rust
will be treated with Rustbuster Fe-123. Rustbuster technicians will use their discretion in
what areas to convert and which areas to leave.
6 Underbody coated with Dinitrol 4941 Black wax, this includes the suspension shock
absorbers springs roll bars axles and drive shafts. Floor pan underside fuel tank and all
brake hoses. Engine gearbox and prop shafts on rear wheel drive vehicles are not coated
7 We inject all cavities, sills sub frames chassis rails outriggers, hollow suspension
components. On the full rust proofing service, we also treat Door pillars, doors boot and
bonnet seams and inject with Rustbuster Classic 3125 cavity wax. The material will lay in
the bottom of cavities and seams and a fog mist layer of wax will be applied to all upper
cavity areas.
8 Cavity wax is injected via holes that already exist where possible or via holes drilled into
the vehicle chassis and bodywork, a 10 mm hole is drilled and plugged with a 10 mm
plug. Drain holes are left clear even when drilled by ourselves. Injection points are made
at our discretion.
9 We will endeavour to remove any overspray from your vehicle before you collect. In the
event that you find some overspray that has not been removed it can be easily removed
with a soft cloth and white spirit, this will not harm the paintwork in any way.
10 ARCH GUARD SERVICE If previously requested your vehicles wheel arch inner, the inner
3cm or so that returns in towards the tyre, will be sanded or bristle blasted to a clean
rust free surface, the outer edge of you wheel arch (the body side) will be masked off.
Epoxy Mastic will be applied to both sides of the inner return edge for approx. 3 cm
(depending on the car) Under no circumstances will the outer bodywork of the car if
corroded (the outer body work from the wheel arch inner edge) be coated within the
price quoted for the arch guard service. Our technician will provide you with a separate
quote for this work. We will not go ahead without your say so. Our standard finish on
the arch guard service is s Black stipple.
11 WELDING & FABRICATION If we discover that your vehicle requires welding work before
we can proceed with the rust proofing process you will be informed via your contact
number above. Our welding estimates are just that and wherever possible we will
endeavour to keep to them. Our rates are £45.00 per hour + vat. This includes materials
for welding, sheet metal for fabrication Epoxy primer and seam sealing + vat. Any
bought in OE panels will be an extra charge. All welding work will be primed and seam
sealed prior to being rust proofed. We keep a record of all welding repairs on camera. If
you require a copy of the welding work we can provide copies on a USB stick at a cost of
£5 + vat. We will have to be notified before the work commences that this service is
required. If you decline to have the vehicle welded at this point you will be due to pay
50% of the price quoted.

Personally,I Wouldn't trust anyone to do a thorough enough job.
If I was you I would spend 2 quid on a wire brush and twenty quid on a can of waxoil and drench every nook and cranny with the stuff.

The downside of spraying goo in every nook and cranny ( on top of rust ) makes it nigh impossible to do any future welding repair.

Avoid Waxoyl like the plague. It does an ace job of sealing in any moisture and allowing the rot to continue without you seeing it.

Stripping, rust-proofing and re-sealing the underside of my Quattro took a lot more work than a wire brush and some Waxoyl. We used a lot of products from rust.co.uk and everything seems okay so far.

I've used their products for years and found them good. I can't comment on their application service though. I avoid Waxoyl too. I had a Triumph Toledo as a daily car about 20 years ago which was rust-free when I bought it and regularly treated it with Waxoyl using a compressor and proper gun to apply inside the sills making sure the drain holes were clear. Despite this one day after several years of ownership I noticed a bleb on one sill. I pressed on it and went straight through and made a hole two or three inches long where it had rusted from within. A closer inspection revealed an even covering of Waxoyl over the whole of the inside of the sill yet it had still rusted. I still can't work out why.

I've used Bilt-Hamber products as well, they seem on a par with the rust.co.uk stuff.

I spent many, many hours on my back doing this job on my Triumph last winter.
If it's a keeper, and you have the time, I would do it yourself. Strip back to bare metal, kill rust, zinc prime, then start thinking about wax. No one you pay will care as much about how well the job is done as you, and it's not necessarily a task requiring a lot of skill, just patience and desire to do it right.

Thank you very much for the responses everyone. Unfortunately time is one thing I really don't have right now, and that's why I need to get someone else to do the job.

I have used them. Last year.
I have an Audi A4 cabriolet 3.0tdi, which I bought at 3 years old and intend to keep for ever. Despite the fact it is galvanised, there was starting to appear quite a lot of surface rust.

I had them do the full treatement, including injecting cills etc.

They had car for 2 days, I got a hire car (they have an arrangement with local company) and spent the night in a hotel.

I spent a lot of time, finding some one I trusted, I was impressed with what I saw when I was htere.

A couple of months ago the car went in for MOT, so I had a chance to look at it properly underneath, I was very happy with what I saw. They did not skimp! Worth every penny to have the job done properly. I can not begin to imagine it ever rusting now!

Highly recommended.

Same here, I spent 5 years restoring my VW Camper and although I probably could have done this myself I would rather pay for a professional service that knows what they are doing and gets to all the right places as I don't want to repeat the resto any time soon.
I also took a hire car, stayed at a B&B (spent a day visiting Lincoln) and had the full service. They did a very nice job, cavity waxed and undersealed, engine and various components masked off. they drilled holes and plugged them, all as described.
It's not a cheap service but I'm happy with it.
