Can anyone help me i.d. a 30's classic from a description?

Spotted today just outside Wallingford, Oxfordshire - a pale green coupe (or possibly folding/rotating hardtop) looked late 30's, and judging by the Union Jack badges on the side, British. The rear window was a small split oval (like a 50's Beetle). The really distinctive thing thing was the grill - raked back, curved horizontally and possibly vertically too, and with a wide metal band where it joined the bonnet. It was made up of flat vertical slats, rather than the usual mesh or round bars. No mascot that I could see.

Not a bad shout that, but this was bigger than that I think, and was either a hardtop or folding hardtop. The grill was similar in the way that it blends into the bonnet, but was less fussy, and with a distinctive wide band where it met the bonnet that the Triumph doesn't have - don't think it had the chrome vents on the sides either. The Dolomite saloon has a split rear window, but not as oval as on the car I saw.

Could it be an Allard?

I don't think it was an Allard, but I've just searched Google images for Allards and found a picture of a prototype folding hardtop with a split rear window! Don't think it was though, the grill was curved in both directions like the Triumph.

AC Saloon?

Again, it has a lot of similarities, but no, not an AC. That band around the grill is missing on the AC, and the AC's wings are more obviously 40's in design - the mystery car had thinner wings/fenders.

I know it has Union Jack badges but it sounds very much like a Peugeot 402 B from the late thirties

Chrysler Airflow has a split rear window similar to a Beetle and curved grille but the rest doesn't fit - and it's American.

No, not a Peugeot, they are one of the few makes I can recognise from that era! Not a Chrysler either, having googled the Airflow.
I did wonder if it was some sort of special bodied Bentley, maybe a 3 1/2, but Google images has failed me again.

Lagonda?

Was it big like an aeroflow, medium like the triumph or tiny like a 'seven??

Might be getting somewhere with the Lagonda! Something like a DeVille looks pretty similar. Were they available without the the spare wheel carriers, and did they have split rear screens? Grill looks close but I thought it was more raked. Certainly large and imposing, not one-for-each-foot Austin 7 size.

As a Lagonda owner myself I didn't think of that perhaps as you say because of your description of the radiator grill. The only Lag that had a raked back grill was the Continental and that doesn't really fit the rest of your description.
