Pontiac Sunbird
Discussion
Getting the car trailered to mine in next few days, will post interior pics when it arrives, as far as I understand it's shot (esp seats). Paintwork needs sorting though not sure I'll give it a full respray, electrical gremlins to sort out, and new soft top needs to be fitted. And probably a lot more. Not certain what I'll do with it, most likely potter around in it around over the winter then maybe see if a classic auctioneer is interested in taking it on before the summer.

Love random yank stuff. Pics of the interior are needed!
What are you planning on doing with it?

thought it was interesting as an American spin on a Mk 2 Cavalier.
Yes, it's definitely interesting. The Mk2 Cavalier convertible is rare enough, but I can't imagine there are many American J-body convertibles in the UK.NigeT said:
Wonder if anybody here's seen any others around!
Nope, that's very unlikely! Yours might be the only Sunbird convertible in the country. Assume it's a four cylinder, with a three speed automatic?Correct it's a four cylinder 2-litre lump with a 3-speed auto transmission. Just took delivery today, plenty of work ahead but it seems to be a good-un!

Congrats, but weird isn't it? Growing up in the '70s, "Pontiac Firebird", along with a screaming chicken on the hood, provokes romantic images of power slides & J turns, whereas "Pontiac Sunbird", which is effectively the same thing - an imaginary concept blending heat & plumage, - evokes feelings of fwd awfulness & mirth. All about individual perceptions I guess, & well done for rescuing it!
GM's J platform must be about the most widely used ever. Just check out all the cars that used it:

Hi!
I am just posting on this thread because I used to own this exact Pontiac Sunbird in the states. I know this is the same one because of a tiny crack in one of the gauges that shows in the interior picture, the color scheme, the color of the seats, the after market wheels, the brand of tire, and the fact I sold it to somebody in the UK in 2012 (who had it shipped there). I was googling pictures of the 1984 Pontiac Sunbird to show somebody what this car had looked like and then, to my astonishment, one of the first results was literally my car.
Just so you know, this car had a new engine in 2010 (about 60k miles into its existence) also, and was a crate new engine!
So, that's really all I have to say! Just that I was gobsmacked at the fact it looked basically the same in 2016 as when I'd bought it in 2007 or when I sold it in 2012. I don't know if anyone has a further update on it.
