I can well remember laughing out loud around the mid 80's on a visit to Ripspeed to visit my mate who worked there, when a similar hideous creation turned up outside, it was a equally ghastly bodykitted Merc SL. The 80's 'medallion man' driving it clearly thought he was the dog's, but you could see all the staff and most of the customers were pi$$ing themselves.
Not sure about the nice car bit to start with but this was on eBay for £25,000 a few weeks ago

This was 2014, also went there in 2010 in my Escort Cosworth.
All the Escorts present in 10 were gone in 14.

The mid 80's were the era of excess and of power dressing. It was a time of Miami Vice, of rolling the sleeves up on your suit jacket (usually every 30 seconds as they kept falling down your arm again!), a time when being seen to be flashy was normal.
The only people who thought cars like these were "A laughing stock" in '86 were the old fogey's who were out of touch with what was cool at the time!
Had you been @ 14~22years old in '86 and in touch with the very latest trends then this car would have been "Well wicked man!", as it was a "Miami Vice" style car on UK roads.
Today, it's it's a classic example of how things went too far in the 80's - The motoring equivalent of the super-wide shoulder pads that women wore "back in the day".
The fashion of the 80's did not age well, and that goes for both the clothes and some the modifications made to the cars of the time - This car being a case in point.
Drive this car today and you'd better be prepared to be "A laughing stock"!, as people will ridicule you for driving such a comical looking car.
If you drove it back it '86 though, then the only people who would have ridiculed you would have been those who were simply too old to be cool!
