Just been watching "Le Jog" on TV and ebtertaining it was too.
A few questions for anyone who did the event if I may.
What are the Classes and Categories, there's a huge mix of vehicles there?
What is a self start control?
Did the Triumph 2000 have a paddle gear change or just a removable steering wheel, there seemed to be cables from the centre of the wheel.
Do many of the crews have a "service barge" following, there seemed to be a heck of a lot of "kit" being used in repairs?

If you go onto the HERO web site you can find the standard regs which supply all the details.
I have done the event on the last 2 occasions and without doubt it is a test of endurance with the last day lasting 26 hours with just small stops for food although I did manage an hours sleep at one of them.
Cant comment on the Triumph bit but the two recovery teams that follow the event around are superb in their knowledge and 'bodging' skills and I mean that with total respect.
Each time I have said never again but within a few weeks start thinking about another go

HERO have a tendency to make up the classes once the have the entry, grouping cars by type and age to try and balance things out.
No external planned servicing is allowed, but the organisers always have a support crew (usually Maulden Garage) that follow the event round and make running repairs. Determined competitors will find parts from somewhere, like the guys in the 240z who drove back from the Green Welly shop to Thirsk to get some prop shaft bolts. I've known people go back home to change an engine overnight on RoTT and get back again to stay in the event.
Tony Sheac's Triumph doesn't have a special gearbox, might be an overdrive cable or something maybe?
LeJog is pretty unique amongst Rallies, in theory it's not even a rally, but a reliability trial, hence why nobody actually wins.... in theory...... although everybody wants to win LeJog.... !!
It's on my Bucket list, hopefully to be ticked this year.

Oh self start control is a regularity start without a marshal.
It's marked by a board, usually crossed arrows, crews start at 1 minute intervals and the navigator marks his time card himself with the start time. There is no real point in trying to cheat and start early as it will likely catch you out if the next control is much closer than you think. Saves a marshal which are often in short supply in the middle of the night in December....
