Porsche 924 for a one-off adventure through France

What initially started out as a plan to buy a 90's luxo-barge and plough to the Riviera has now got a bit more complicated. A friend and I are looking at spending up to £3,000 on a car that we can stick a bike rack on the back of, drive it from Bristol to Dover, then Calais to the Alsace, down to the French Alps then back, via Paris, to Bristol. Chances are we'd be camping along the way.
I was looking at something like a 90's V8 7 series or A8 for a grand, buying it the day we leave, insure it for a week and cancel within the cooling off period. Sounds like a comfy way to get around France, and if it dies we only lose £500 each.
But then I saw the Porsche 924. It looks just about crap enough to be entertaining, but not so crap as to be a total liability. They're only £100 to insure so it's tempting to buy one and keep it for a year (assuming of course they don't lose value). It'd not be a project, I'm not particularly willing to spend time doing more than a service or some minor fettling to it. It wouldn't have to be a cosmetic minter, just capable of doing a couple of thousand miles and still be vaguely mobile at the end of it.
Ideally we'd be looking at a post 1981 standard 924, not and S or Turbo. I appreciate it will not be fast. Owning it for a bit before the trip would be the plan, to give me an idea of whether or not any work needs doing.
Is this daft? Will a £2k Porsche survive this and still be worth +/- £200 of the purchase price by the time we're done?

If you buy well, then a 924 should see you right.
However, I still prefer your original idea of getting a '90s 7-Series and doing it in that. Having owned an E38 740i, I can't think of any car I'd rather do a long road trip in (short of an L322 Range Rover, but those aren't in budget!)

If heading to Paris take note of the recently introduced Crit'Air requirements..... (think French breathalyser law debacle for tree huggers). You'll need a sticker if you want to drive in Paris and an old banger will likely be denied access.
If you plan to use a 924 and a bike rack, have a close look at how you will affix said rack. If you plan to use a towbar, good luck finding one!
