Black / silver plates on caravan

I will be towing my classic caravan with my classic volvo of 1968 vintage. Went to local outlet to buy suitable number plate for the caravan and wanted a black and silver jobbie to go with the car. Trader said sorry law requires you to use the odern black on yellow on the trailer or caravan. I went along with this but somehow it seems not quite right ?

As far as I know and can tell, that is rubbish. Why not approach one of the sellers of legal black and white/silver plates and ask them, ie Framptons for one.

As far as I know, as long as the plate style matches the tow car, that is it.

I would have thought the caravan has to display the same style of plate as the car, although cant seem to find out for certain with a quick search. I shal be doing the same with my 1974 Lanr ROver shortly and I intend to use a black and silver aluminium plate as per whats on the truck.

That seems to be the case, the "displaying number plates" .gov web site (which I've closed now so can't link to) just says they must be the same as the tow car. I guess you could read that as if the tow car has silver-on-black, then the caravan can, too. Though it has to be said that some stuff on that site isn't 100% accurate.

I think they refer to the same reg number not the style although its not clarified.

That's what I meant by "you could read it as". I don't doubt they mean the same combination of letters and numbers, but it's open to interpretation.

I did find this paragraph:

"(2) Unless the context otherwise requires, a reference in these Regulations to—
(a) a registration plate fixed or to be fixed to a vehicle, or
(b) a registration mark displayed or to be displayed on a plate,

is to be construed, where the vehicle is towing a trailer, so as to include a reference to the
registration plate which is required under these Regulations to be fixed to the trailer or a
reference to the mark displayed on the plate fixed to that trailer."

That is in this PDF file ( http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2001/561/pdfs/u... ) which is entitled "The Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001", which I think is still relevant. That seems reasonably conclusive, in saying that the rules for the towing vehicle apply to the trailer.

Thanks droopsnot for the link. Complicated, no wonder the autofactors said it's illegal to display a black/silver plate. Can of worms, who would think that a number plate could be so problematic.

So don't ask for a number plate for the caravan. It's a replacement for the one of the car which rather mysteriously fell off.
