Old Top Gear ep

Was browsing through old BBC schedules on the BBC Genome site and came across an episode of Top Gear aired on the 8 April 1999 in which, according to the listing, Tiff Needell drives a two seater Jaguar XK sports car around Silverstone (only one of two in existence), described as in the mould of the classic Xk120 and 140 of the 1940s and 50s.
Anyone know what car this is?.

Looks like that could be the one. Dont know what the "in the mould of the classic XK120 and Xk140" was all about, nothing very classic 1950s Jaguar about it to me.
I agree about the old Top Gear. Certainly a better programme than what it became when the 3 Stoogies took over the series. Top Gear post 2002 became a reality TV fest for the imbecile, moronic petrol head crowdn. I preferred Clarkson in those early series because I think he was a lot funnier and wittier.

I think Top Gear should go back to its early years format. Far too much buffoonery and childish antics for my liking, but people loved it for some reason. It is a motoring programme at the end of the day.
The early shows still had their blend of factual content and humour without going all Tom Foolery. Clarkson's humour was at its best during his co-presenting years with Willson, Needell, Berry and co imo; some classic laugh out loud phrases and one liners, one where hes on a golf course talking about executives buying the same old exec cars all the time. Only Clarkson could make it sound so hilarious. Never found May and Hammond funny one bit, more so Hammond.

But back then, to know, learn about a car: it had to be done through a magazine or physically visiting a dealer. lets be honest, car comparison's/data/reliability wasn't as good as it is now.
In a flash now, you can google any car and find out its strengths and weaknesses. look at the Honest John website as a good example.
can you imagine a car show now where they just drove around in the new vauxhall adam, the mini one, the ford ka, the renault scenic and formally reviewed it ? It would be terribly dull. who would really watch that ?
we forget we're talking about an era of just 3 or maybe 4 TV channels. when we were watching old TG: there wasn't a great deal to watch as an alternative !!
