Rover P6 V8 - how do I tell how old it is?

Thought I'd got an SD1 engine in the Land Rover (as the number on the V5 is from an SD1) but turns out to be a P6 auto 1967-76, with e 10.5:1 CR. Any way of telling a date of the engine?? It starts 4252.

I am sure there is a way, not my area of expertise though. One thing to consider is that in approximately 1972/3 Rover change the rear Crank seal from rope to lip seal and the later are way better. Worth thinking about if you are putting a new engine in

Not changing the engine, just be good to find out how old it is. The front end is newer as are the rockers but I'm not expert, hence why its in the garage now.

Thanks. I've done the research but want to try an nail down where between 1967 and 1976 it was produced.

I think the last 10.5 - 1 engine was 1973 - had HS6 carbs (separate float bowls), but really, everything within reason is interchangeable on these engines, so what's there now may not be what it started with. A nice upgrade is later heads - SD1 , vitesse or early 3.9's. Later heads will probably give too much compression with 10.5 pistons. Check out the V8 site for definitive info.
