An edition of Chasing classic cars showed the auction of #1.....ch no CSX2000 and Carroll's grandson was present ,so I'd like to think that was all genuine.

The car in the link Larjammer posted.

What provenance does the other car have to be #1 ?

AFAICR CSX2000 is the prototype Shelby Cobra and the UK car is the first AC Cobra.
The Shelby is the first Cobra (chassis and body built by AC and V8 fitted by Shelby).
The AC is the first UK production car and, therefore, less significant.

It was also the subject (or rather said to be the subject) of the first in the series of "The Worlds Most Expensive Cars" on TV recently. Which should have been a great series of programmes, but if that first one was anything to go by, wasn't by a long way.

Correct.

The car pictured is the first car for the UK/European market (i.e badged as an AC) not THE first ever one made, a slightly disingenuous placard statement IMHO.

And while we're talking disingenuous isn't it strictly speaking an AC 260 as opposed to an AC Cobra ?

Known in AC circles as a MK 1
