Fun, reasonably reliable, cheap (ish) weekend car?

Looking for a fun weekend car, something classic/retro but not so old it's a pain to use/maintain.
Also not painfully slow if it can be avoided..
Rear wheel drive.
Preferably coupe, below £5k?
Been really thinking but struggling to find anything that tickles my fancy.
Any ideas welcome

Sounds like an E36\E46 BMW 3 Series Coupe would fit your criteria

Mgb seems the most obvious. I struggle to call 3 series bmws classic except the e21. E30 maybe. As you have GT or roadster , should be ok to look after and I'd hope 5k gives you some choice, maybe not the very best but very usable.

TVR S Series. Can be bought cheap, yes they're reliable, the roof comes off, 30 odd mpg, easy to maintain, sound like WWIII and are brilliant fun and get thumbs up from everybody. Briliiant little cars.

Ok, having recently discovered the MGF, it's quite the bargain if you're not tall.

The MGF ought to be fabulous, and you can buy one for about 25p, but for some reason the pub stories about HGF have perhaps more veracity to them than most pub myths about particular cars. The K Series is a good engine, and works OK for Lotus and Caterham, AFAIK. Why does it boil itself when in a Rover or an MGF?
