Talk to me about C-types
Discussion
Obviously not real ones...
I quite fancy getting into a C-type replica with as much original running gear as possible
There are loads on here and they all look pretty amazing!
Can anyone help me navigate through the Realm vs Proteus vs real Proteus? I know there are some real Jag heads on here!
Or should I just buy a Mk2...
Many thanks in advance
Joel

I love the bit from the ad for the 160K one
Sorry I can't help with your query, you need to wait for Lowdrag to be along in the morning who'll be able to tell you everything you need to know about C-Types. If you hunt back through here you'll find a long thread covering the build of his one.
PS, please can I claim an anorak badge for pointing out that a "C-Type" head on an XK140 should be painted red but the head of a C-Type should be unpainted.

The 3.8-litre engine is C-Type specification but fitted with 9.8-1 compression Cosworth pistons on a polished and nitrated crankshaft under polished gas flowed E type head.
So, not at all C-Type spec then. Sounds fun though. Would also point out that a 'C' Type head is not what most think it is. Back in the day Jaguar needed a head with more meat to machine out to take bigger valves etc, it was identified with the letter 'C'. Unfortunately the foundry cast 300 instead of the 30 actually requested and the surplus, machined to standard for the model dimensions, found their way onto standard roadgoing sports model Jaguars. So yes, a nice thing to have but not exceptionally rare and, unless subsequently modified, no different to a standard head.
No, that came later for the D Type and had yet bigger valves with triple valve springs and, I think, different cams. It also had a rev limit of IIRC 6150rpm which you ignored at your peril. The originals are rare but good copies have been available for some time. I bought an original in bits in 1989, I think, off a chap who I met in the M4 Heston Service, for £17,500, a lot of money then for a cylinder head!
Here'd I be. If you want a "proper" car, then look no further than this one:-

If I am right, it looks like one of the 12 Peter Jaye cars made, and they are superbly original and very highly collected. I haven't seen one on the market for years. No price as yet, but indications are a mere £275,000. Form an orderly queue. As regards more mundane replicas, (no slight intended to anyone) it depends on your budget and I can't add much more than I wrote in the other thread.
The original Proteus cars of the days of Jim Marland are very collectable too, especially the all-alloy ones, but Proteus has had many identities, including ownership by the Gregson family, then they became Enduro, then back to the Gregsons, and are now part of Lynx. They now make an all-alloy car to modern specifications, and while lovely cars, there isn't much originality about them except the shape. RX8 rear axle, fuel injected, catalyst, Wilwood disc brakes; you get the picture. It will, as always, depend on your budget. One starts at Realm and as you dig deeper into your wallet you move up the ladder. And that is no slight on the Realm cars either.
And if you like the look of my XKSS, well, you must revise your budget sharply upwards these days I'm afraid. Again, Lynx make them still, but the originals of the 80s are the collected ones. And there are only 11 of those in the world.

ETA:- How the hell do I replace the photo of the XKSS in the "my garage" section? Since the photobucket scandal I have uploaded to Flickr but can't seem to find the right type of link. Help please.

Found on another Forum and it seems Mozilla is your friend if you use Firefox:
There are two new extensions for Firefox called Photobucket Hotlink Fix and photobucket embed fix, the latter also available for Chrome. It appears that they somehow bypass or spoof the paywall. So you can at least see existing images.

Have to confess I have never been a Jag fan, but that really floats my boat http://ckl.co.uk/sales/1981-c-type-tool-room-copy/...

No, she's not for sale, but one sold at the Revival several years back for £385,000. Mind you, it was in better condition than mine (but then I have spent years putting patina on mine so I would say worse!) and did belong in the day to Nicolas Cage. I don't like "chocolate box" cars, as I call them; use it or lose it. But then mine belonged to Michael Palin. Pass the cotton buds please. I can put you in touch with someone who might be able to persuade an owner to part with one for the right money, but you might wait a long time. The C-type at CKL would be a good acquisition though.
ETA The above photo was taken the last time I cleaned it - two years back.

Morning all. Does anyone know much about the Cera C Type replicas from the late 90's period? There is one on ebay at the moment at £115k, but it seems to have a different suspension set up (more akin to the Suffolk C type rep) compared to a previous one that I have seen which was more like a Proteus. There seems to be very little info anywhere about the John Gregson Cera replicas, and what there is seems to be somewhat conflicting. If anyone could help me out with the history of the cars and whether they are considered to be one of the better replicas (or whether they should be stayed well away from), I would very much appreciate it.
Not sure. I have no intention of buying this one. It seems expensive (although I'm happy to stand corrected). It's more about filling in the gaps on my knowledge. Plenty of info on Lynx, Suffolk, Proteus, Realm etc but very little on John Gregson and Cera (Classic English Racing Automobiles).
The less you know about the deceased John Gregson the better. Just stay away from that era of Proteus would be the consensus of most I believe. Lynx have had three owners and only ever made 5 C-types. Much sought after today. Proteus span the originals by Jim Marland, then the Gregsons, then Enduro, then the Gregsons, then Nigel Forsyth. Proteus are now made in the UK and are I believe about £175,000 or even more. There's one for sale at £130,000 I see. Cars roughly divide into two prices - alloy and fibre. Ask Suffolk how much their new alloy car is. I don't know but I saw the shell at XK70
If we are talking about the last Gregson/Proteus incarnation, around the turn of the century, I have never heard of it and as I have said, if father and son Gregson were involved I don't want to know. The son is now working from Poland, and the last car I saw made by him made me want to vomit.
ETA:- CERA was their new business after selling Proteus to Enduro and before Enduro went bust and before the Gregsons reacquired the name.
