64 GTO crash at Goodwood

It's bad enough that your driver smashes your multi million pound Ferrari against the tyre wall at Goodwood but why would you fit what looks like a Mountney steering wheel with a home made center badge to it. The way it deforms is shockingly worrying and then all that's needed to straighten it is a quick tap. Don't think I'd be brave enough to drive 40 plus million quids worth of Ferrari with a wheel made of chocolate.

I noticed how easily it bent.

I did wonder how a wood rim wheel would have taken the impact, maybe better for the drivers hand as the wheel deformed who knows eh ?

Conversely it doesn't really matter how much damage you do, it's worth so much any repair is economical. You could feed it through a wood chipper until it was a pile of metal shavings.

Oddly, a crash like will add "provenance" (should it ever be needed, surely not with a GTO even if it is a lowly '64 GTO). And the original, wood rim wheel will probably be worth many thousend by itself, a replacement cheaper and more comfortable wheel makes sense.

A bit like many of the cars there, whose original engines are not used in the car but kept for when the time comes to...realise the asset.

There is more smoke and mirrors in todays classic racing scene then even the best NASCAR stories.

You absolutely do not want to be holding on to a wood rim steering wheel in an accident, lovely as they are to look at. A mate of mine was doing just that and the wood shattered on impact, separating from the aluminium frame and penetrating his arm above the wrist emerging below the elbow. The scars were something to behold!

I'd be happy enough for the steering wheel to deform if the impact was such that I impacted against it................however is the steering column collapsible? - if not it all amounts to nothing!

Triggers broom and all that, this is how the same car finished the TT race at last years revival as a cobra tried to out brake it into lavant.

He's sensibly got another £38m GTO at home in case he needs a replacement.



I'd like to know how he got that purchase past his missus. The man maths put forward must have been spectacular!

I don't think that's a problem he faces.

That car has, as far as I know, been at virtually every Revival since the beginning in 1998. I've seen it race so many times, and in this case you can't blame the driver but the ruddy Corvette that moved acoss him having at first kept left. I wonder if any of you have seen the Bamford's own track arounf their lake? Bloody scary, I can tell you!

Apologies for such a crude question, but who would pay for the repairs? Would the car be insured?

Watching the race this evening, I wondered whether insurance would be higher if it was wet?!
