Right, long story short:
I have an MGB GT which rolled off the production line on 12/03/74 (my date of birth, and I have the MG certificate to prove so). The car was firstly registered in Belgium in 1974.
Car cmae back to UK in Apr 1980, registered with a 1980 plate, V5 reports:
date of first registration 15 04 1980
date of registration in the UK 15 04 1980

On the front, section 3 special notes, "declared manufactured 1974"

Was it not, techically, wrongly registered in 1980? But a part from that, on the eyes of DVLA, do I now have a 1974 car or a 1980 car?

The car is ongoing a proper restoration so it does not make a big difference, but I expect it to be on the road some time next year...

Have a read of the 'New Rules question' thread.Heritage certificate should be sufficient to get it registered as historic and therefore tax exempt and MOT exempt from May.

Thanks, just read the thread and it seems to be answering all of my questions. Interestingly it already says on the V5 "declared manufactured in 1974" so possibly not needing the heritage certificate either (which I have anyhow).

Back in the day, used imports just got put onto a then-current plate. If that'd been imported more recently, the second date (UK) would be the date of the import reg, the original one would be the Belgian first-reg date.

If you prove the age, DVLA will put it back onto an N plate.

If it already has that, then the DVLA accept the date and will use that for VED and MOT exemption. That's what mine says after I'd provided them with suitable proof of build date.

As 2cv said, imports and others, such as decommissioned military vehs were given current plates back in 1980.

Not sure when it changed but I seem to recall them still issuing ex-military cars with current nos.on the original Y-suffix. Perhaps it changed when they introduced the A-prefix in 83/84.

I brought a 1977 car back to the UK with me and was given an X registration in 81/82, so you might well be right.

Yes your car will be tax and mot free.send log book of with build date from the mg people and fill in log book were it says taxation class as historic .you won.t need a mot unless its modified. They might.might give you a new reg number that relates to the year it was built.

I think my mates ex-Mil Series IIA 1/2 Ton Lightweight is on a Y plate...or poss even an A prefix.......? (haven't seen it in years)

He's now managed to verify the original chassis numbers etc., dated to '71 production and is about to apply for period number plate.
