Hi All,

I need a part for my 67 mustang.
Unfortunately the part is from a 70 falcon, which makes it incredibly rare, and not sold anywhere!

So, I can either get lucky and find one, or get one made... and i'm not all that lucky.

The specs I have are in the picture below, and I assume imperial.

Does anyone know if this is enough detail to get a spring made with, or know anyone who might be able to do this?

I would be surprised if you can't find one that's pretty close to it.
How exact does it have to be?

well i've got one in now from a different year that has a different "springiness" to it, and the transmission isn't shifting correctly frown

I also don't really know what these numbers mean!

Have a look in the local papers/magazines for Model steam engineers, or instrument makers that sort of thing, making springs is second nature in engineering circles it shouldn't be too difficult to get one made for a couple of beer tokens. smile

Google is bringing up this link about a shifter kit.

http://www.ddfra.it/social/m/feedback/view/Transgo...

If not these should be able to help.

Maybe try one of the model-specific forums in the US? There's always people somewhere who know stupid/odd bits of trivia, such as it happens to be identical to the one in a 1974 something-or-other, even though it's not written down anywhere.

Next issue will be, I think one of the numbers is wrong on the specs!!!
says:

6-0@757=160
1.19x29x036

but I think the 29 is wrong...

The pic you show looks like it is for a shift kit, its the instructions on what parts to replace & leave out, so the spec listed wouldn't be right if you are after a stock spring.
The parts are not rare, you just have to know exactly what you are after & where to get them.
Did you put the valve in first, on top of the spring?

Tried following the different routes but I could never exit the maze!

As mentioned above, model steam tinkers would be a good shout, friends dad used to do it and he made everything bespoke.

Do you know what needs changing from your current spring and get them to create a modified version of it?

yep, valve in first.

The spring is held on by edge of the filter. An absolutely terrible design that meant I lost the first one I had.

Someone gave me a spring/valve from a similar transmission, but it requires too much of a welly on the gas to get it to go from third to first, so it seems like the spring is too hard, which would make sense as the '78+ version of the c4 transmission has a 6-12oz spring, whilst the '70-71 has a 6-0oz spring.

The part does get given a few different names, but I can't find it for sale anywhere, including as part of kits or a new valvebody.
annoyingly the transmission is not original to the car, which is a 67 mustang.

Anyhow, possible names for the part are:

>Governor Spring
>Valvebody Pressure Regulator
>Manual valve detent plunger and spring
>Part 741VA

Would prefer to buy one that's proven to work in it, but will try a model person if I can find one locally

Considering how many automatic transmission specialists there are in the USA who rebuild these transmissions on a daily basis, and assuming your 1970 Ford Falcon is a standard 1970 C4 model, I'm struggling to believe there's not one of them who could help find this spring.

Personally speaking, I'd be wary of wasting time and money on having random springs made by spring/model people, and would wait to find the correct spring - You've already tried one spring that was similar but didn't do the job correctly, you might get lucky and get a spring that works, or you might try a hundred and find you've completely wasted your time.

I completely agree

Which means that either I don't know the right name for it yet, or I'm terrible at finding things on the internet.

I have phoned a few companies in the states, who have suggested getting a spring made! I will be over there at the end of June, so if all else fails can just wait until then and pop into a specialist or two.

There's a place in Redditch that advertises in The Automobile mag - they do one-offs & small batches of all types except leaf springs. I don't have a copy of the mag to hand but it's a good source of ads for suppliers of vintage stuff.

I'm struggling with this............

Surely you just need to buy a complete performance shift kit for a C4 from Summit or JEGS etc.....??

Such as ....
