I´ve been after an E24 for a while. I want a manual LHD car and have seen this on ebay.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-628-CSI-E24-LHD/282...

Mechanicals I am unconcerned about but rust on these from what I´ve read is a deal breaker.

Can anyone with experience of these cars give some advice?

Rust is the killer on these as you say .
I searched for nearly a year for one and looked at many eventually buying one that was unmolested and had an expensive history . It was in need of some work but that , I discovered ,was the tip of the iceberg........
I could write volumes on what to look for , and there is a lot , but here's a buying guide from the best site for these cars .
http://www.bigcoupe.com/buying.html
Sills , sunroof area , arches, front inner wings ,outer wings (£600+ each BMW,£450 non ) floors X 4 ,rear panel below lights ,SUBFRAME MOUNTS ,did you here that ...front inner panel etc, etc.
Not many non BMW panels available but some here https://www.wallothnesch.com/en/ some more on Ebay DE too.
I had no problem with mechanical parts although the rear caliper pistons and seals from Buenos Aires was pretty close....
Seriously , all of them rust due to design so my advice is to check all the above with a sharp pointy thing and then get your mate to do the same .
If you get a good one you will love it .There are two versions ,the series one and the series two . They are completely different cars being based on a different chassis and VERY few parts are interchangeable . I have a series one and prefer the purity of it to the series two but unless you have masochistic tendencies I'd advice a series two.
I've just updates my build thread on mine after the photobucket debacle so it may be of help to you to see what can , and will to some degree , lurk beneath.
PM me if I can help you further as I've been where you are ...

EDIT . Just looked at your link to the car . Series one and it has all the visible signs of much of what I had to do.

Look every where for rust especially the sills and jacking points, wheel arches, floor including boot floor, suspension strut tops, sunroof, front and rear scuttle panels, doors, bottoms of the 1/4 panels under the rear bumper, inner front wings. Good luck.

I'd echo the sentiments about bigcoupe.com - an excellent resource

There seems to be a lot of love for the E24 currently with a couple of articles in the UK classic car magazines this month alone . Although my preference is manual it's interesting to note the articles suggest that the auto box suits the characteristics of 635 better. Now whether this is the case for other E24 variants I don't know but perhaps you should consider an auto so as to increase the available cars?
