Rover P6 3500 V8 Difficult Starting
Discussion
Hello all,
My 3500 started first turn of the key for the last 4 years, now it fires up then cuts out immediately. If i try it with no choke it is better but will fire and then tickover too low and cut out, if I give it choke then it will fire and cut out immediately again. It eventually starts and then after a couple of seconds of clearing its throat runs super smooth again. Once warm it then starts immediately as normal. I've tried it with all levels of choke, warm and cold weather and the symptoms are pretty consistent. Any ideas as to what the problem might be?
A few more bits of info: it's running an Edelbrock 500 carb, SD1 electronic ignition, electric fuel pump through a pressure regulator - but nothing has been fiddled with. However, the only thing I have done - and feel free to shoot me down and call me an idiot, but as it was such a great car I thought I'd 'treat' it and run some of that redex stuff through, the problem started happening after that...it does seem to run a lot smoother and with loads of grunt (however it is difficult to quantify as it's a well tweaked engine anyway) once it's warm...
Thoughts?
Cheers
Joe

normal starting is to pull a bit of choke, give one pump on the pedal, start and fire, then push the choke in almost immediately.
I just tried now, no choke, took the pancake air filter off, looked down the barrels and pumped the accelerator - saw the fuel flood in, then turned the key and she fired up fine first time, tickover was very low for about 10 seconds then fine. She's not started for 5 days, I know the warmer weather would help but that did seem a lot easier than usual - could it be a restriction in the air filter?
Curiouser and curiouser....

If the Redex went into the fuel tank then it's possible that some dirt might have been dislodged, worth checking the float bowl.
If you now have a reliable start, you can operate the fast idle linkage/cam to get the revs up during warm-up. There's probably some default settings for the linkage/cam to adjust the fast idle when the choke is operated. One change at a time!
