Jack Rich Snr - Car Collection. Voisin

A couple of years ago whilst at the Le Mans Classic I saw a Voisin. It's not my type, my style or w.h.y but over the years I had known about them and was intrigued to see one in the "flesh”; what a fascinating car!

I don't know if you too have seen this YouTube clip but I thought it worthy of a post.
I had never heard of Mr J Rich Snr. why indeed I might, I hear you ask?, but somewhat like the Voisin, I was intrigued, from a non-intrusive, voyeuristic, perspective, I hasten to add, as to the man's taste; I really admire his perfectionist approach to the presentation of his collection; that I had his wherewithal!; I'm grateful that he shares so willingly.
I recognise the Delahaye that is mentioned, I think this is the car that was unearthed from a New York suburb?
Whilst watching the video my thoughts turned to design.
I remember several years ago hearing how Mazda set up their styling clinic in California and then surrounded their studio with iconic models e.g. Élan, E Type etc., in an attempt,successfully, to imbue the culture of their design objectives.
I muse if the likes of Ian Callum et al, wonder around a car collection such as the Schlumpf collection, Blackhawk or even an individual cars such as the Bugatti, Voisin, 250 Lusso and touch, feel the cold chrome, admire the Farina flanks and draw (sic) their inspiration - wasn't that the "Grand Tour" that the architects, artists and sculptures used to do in Italy and France and from which we gained our idyllic gardens in Woodstock Kilkenny and our terraces in Bath and Glasgow our Leazes Crescent in Newcastle?
I look forward to the 2019 XK and future pipeline; there is much to laud our designers for.
Pistonheads Classified has a Sagaris for sale at £100k. Stunning and individualistic as ever a TVR could be; we are reserved in our adulation of our British designers and yet our engineering, design and innovation are world class along with our individual design contributions.
Maybe I am being a little harsh in saying we are reserved, our garages and forums are actually filled with dreams of wide bodied 1966 s’ Types fitted with supercharged v8’s and Silver Spirits fitted with Range Rover air ride suspensions, is it imagination that limits design or is it that, as my son, so harshly and yet eloquently puts it “our taste are limited by our economic circumstances? , mmmm…. he is an architect after all.
Perhaps at one end of my perceived spectrum we are, but at the other, a lathe turned, brass heater control valves that resides in a Sagaris, designed and manufactured across the bleak Lancashire moors (I am allowed to say that having been born there), that transcends that argument, until it ends in the showroom and therein, hands over in the form of a cheque- the turned up collar of Gerry McGovern v the more demure Mr C. belies the truth. Footnote- I’d rather drive a Jag any day.
It’s a far cry from the synthesis of the Chinese photographing and 3D imaging of the Evoque that produced the Landwind. Does the originality of design come from the heart and mind? Does the turned lathe of a brass heater control come from the innate deep culture psyche of imagery formed from black and white picture of Spitfire and Whitley Bomber/ Henkel’s stuck on bedroom walls or is it/ does it, come from stripping away the extraneous to reveal?
Recently I watched a documentary on the making of the Bentley Benteyga, it was narrated by the head of Bentley Design who commented “ Dat zee curve of line along zee flank, was reminiscent of the zee Bentley Continental R Type of 1955” …..mmmmm - Where does authenticity and originality cross?
I’m not being jingoistic, I’m talking and musing on originality of design and where that resonates with the soul.
My wife has lovely dark hair, I sometimes catch my smile, my love for her, the way she moves, the flare of her hips, innate, imbued, and intrinsic?
