Refurbish Oil Temperature Gauge

The original VDO oil temperature gauge in my 1998 M Roadster has taken to throwing fits until the oil is up to temperature, at which point it calms down (or pings off the scale). I have sourced an American one that works just fine - only its marked in Fahrenheit of course. They are no longer available form BMW and when they were the price was mad.

Has anyone had a similar gauge repaired successfully anywhere?
