Classic insurance

I`ve always said you only know how good,or bad, an insurance company can be when you make a claim.
I insure my Mercedes R129 with Equity Red Star on an agreed value deal, very competitive premium. Last month the screen was damaged. I wanted my favorite Mercedes Specialist to fit a genuine Mercedes Screen and sent them a quote for £680 !!, they agreed immediately. Job done and I was reimbursed very quickly less a nominal excess. Most impressed.

Yes they're all much of a muchness until you claim. I've thankfully never had to claim but a friend of mine is with Hagerty and had to make a big claim a few years ago and they were brilliant, allowing his choice of restorer for the work and no quibble on the very large bill. I moved to them last year from Footman James and they were a bit cheaper but the nice part was dealing with someone enthusiastic about cars on the phone. A handy clause on the policy means I can drive any other Hagerty-insured car (with permission obviously!) and be fully covered albeit with a £1000 excess.
I've been with Peter Best for years and years - always good service.

Think yourself lucky, mine costs 850 quid to insure.....its only a Frogeye!!
Ouch. That seems excessive but I suppose there's a reason.I have a 190E 2.5-16v on a classic policy with an agreed valuation for c£140 p/a. I've limited the mileage to 2,000 per year but I wouldn't do more than that in it anyway.

I use Footman James and was paying 87 quid and now they have increased a bit for renewal though there was no claims
Can someone suggest other good providers
Same happened to me with FJ, but when it came to the day before renewal they rang to ask why I hadn't renewed, I explained it seemed to have gone up for no reason, they dropped the renewal price to less than the current policy and job was done. Can someone suggest other good providers

Your experience with EQS is far different from mine, I had to claim for 2 of my cars that were flooded and they were appalling.I insure my Mercedes R129 with Equity Red Star on an agreed value deal, very competitive premium. The first ‘assessor’ was a total prick who tried to tell the insurance company I was trying to ‘get my cars restored’ by the insurance company, as I had tried to strip as much down to save it as possible (ie, to minimise the claim and save original parts).. Once we had made a fool of him, they gave me another assessor (George T Mighall - if you ever come across this moron he bangs on about how he deals with Rolls Royce and Lamborghinis as if that makes him an expert). This one was an even bigger prick who was trying to claim that the engine on my TVR (which had around 30 litres of flood water in it when I drained the sump the day after the flood) would not need to be stripped and inspected as a minimum but would just need new oil! He also tried to say that my quattro did not have an electric fuel pump as it had mechanical fuel injection!
Neither of these ‘assessors’ actually came to see the cars, they just made up their drivel to reduce the claim. In the end I refused to deal with these jokers and had a semi reasonable discussion with the EQS ‘engineer’. Even he was a nightmare to deal with.
So be warned, if you ever have a major claim these liars will try and pull every trick in the book.
Totally agree. My E-type was rear-ended 18 months back and the assessor said he could save one silencer but not the other and wanted to paint only the damaged part of the car, not round to the door shut. Also he didn't want to pay out for certain rare parts which are very dear even if you can find them. I got my way but not without a struggle.
any one know if these companies are any good for people who have cars in a city like London. Many of the insurers I used to go to to insure my 'modern classic' no longer are competitive or even willing to insure me and its all down to being in London despite me not having made a claim in years.
