The rolling rule and the black and silver car plate

Hello world.

Just a question about the rule and the plate.

It says "Since April 2015 vehicles manufactured before 1 January 1975 can display the older style plates."

But it also states that "The 40 year exemption date rolls forward automatically each year on 1 April."

Does that mean by now, cars registered be fore 1 January 1978 can use a black and silver car plate?

Or that rule is only for the exemption?

The rule for black and white plates has a fixed date in time, the tax exemption rule is a rolling forty years age IMHO

No. The tax exemption rolls forward. Not the number plate rules.


Although you could give it a try. Plead ignorance and hope to get off with a warning to get it fixed.

The Law trumps Government blogs and websites.

The consensus when this matter was discussed at length a while ago was, I recall, that the number plate rules now follow the 40-year rolling definition of Historic Vehicle.

traditional ’black and white’ number plates (for example,

The question that strikes me about changes to the regs with number plates is when did it suddenly stop be a requirement to have front number plates and why have only some people been told. Word seems to be spreading through, more and more cars are discarding the front plate. A few seem to have gone for a half way stand and hidden the plate inside their windscreen, preferably at an angle that means it can be read by anyone in front. It seems many front end body kits are being supplied with no provision for front number plates. Perhaps it's part of Brexit, maybe the drivers are anticipating the UK becoming a US state and hoping that will change the rules. Who knows.
