Applying for logbook (form V62) with no chassis number

Hi all,

I have purchased a one-off car as a project which came with no log book.

The car is based on a 1988 standard saloon car, and still exists in the DVLA records under the original 'E' registration number.

The problem is the car has a different chassis, and therefore i cannot put the original chassis number on the form V62 when applying for the logbook (i would do if I knew the original chassis number, but i understand it is not possible to retrieve this information online anymore).

How is it best to proceed - do I have to apply for a new registration even though the car was built in 1988 on a 1988 donor car ?

It looks like it's going to get a Q plate.

Usual eight-point rule applies as to whether the original ID is valid or not.

If the "different chassis" is functionally identical to the original, even if it's not quite the exact same design detail, then it's good. I dunno what it is you're dealing with, but 2cvs have a lot of chassis rot problems, and DVLA have been quite clear with the club that aftermarket ladder-style ones are just as acceptable as "original-style" thin steel box.

If it's some kit or DIY conversion that bins the entire original monocoque for a home-brew chassis, then you're on a Q.

If you're good on the original ID, then it's just a question of finding that original VIN. You know the plate, so HPI?

Very carefully................!

It will almost certainly need to be built/rebuilt/recommissioned [delete as appropriate] to current BIVA regulations to stand it getting any sort of registration, Q-plate most likely now as said, even though it may have been originally built in 1988 which is on the cusp of the DVLA date pre-SVA rules, but only if it stays in exactly the same configuration as it was built in...........and you have proof of it!

You really need to read all the 700 odd pages of the BIVA regs before you do anything - which you should have done before buying it to be honest!!

I was unaware HPI checks come back with the chassis number if you don't put the original chassis number in ?

I was aware registration would be a pain when I bought it, and i would have bought it anyway - even if it becomes a static display item

There is a thread on here called 'vin number from reg' or something like that. You could post up the registration on there and someone will probably be able to give you the vin.
