Dark Blue Paint Hunt

Hi. Can I ask the collective for a bit of help on trying to find a suitable dark blue colour for my 1964 lotus seven? I've spent hours prepping a spare set of grp wings and nosecone and fancy a change from the BRG and aluminium that it currently wears. I really fancy a dark blue and ali combo but with a blue that is so dark its almost black. It needs to be solid rather than metallic too as I think metallic would look too 70s, this needs to look 50s/60s.
I've looked at aston, ferrari, jag,etc colours but cant really find one I like.
Would any kind souls have any suggestions for such a colour.

Rolls Royce did a very dark blue in that period. Oxford Blue, is pretty dark but I'm sure they did a darker shade too.

One of my Austins was a nice shade of blue, (IIRC it was Peacock blue).

What's nice is that the Lotus is a direct descendant of the seven as well

Royal blue was the other dark blue used on Slll Silver Clouds

A friend of mine painted a car Ford Midnight Blue which was very dark. I've just google it and there seems to be quite a lot of variation but a couple of nice Ford GTs in a nearly-black blue. Probably cheaper that Rolls point too!

Didn't that Ford blue go purple after a few years,

Ford Midnight Blue is very dark, so would certainly meet the criteria.

A slightly older and slightly lighter version, would be Ford Marine Blue, as used on the last 10 x RS3100 Capri's to be built.




Or going back even further to the 1930's and there's Ford Washington Blue

Washington Blue looks amazing! Very dark blue but I bet in direct sunlight it's amazing.

many thanks chaps for all theses ideas. I really need to be careful that I dont end up with something that goes purple...I once bought a Lotus elise that turned from midnight blue to cadburys dairy mil wrapper. Then, I bought a new suit which was definitely dark blue when I was in the shop....

Being a fan of dark blue italian cars, may I suggest Alfa Dutch Blue or Fiat Lord Blue, neither of which have any hint of Cadbury wrapper.

My Facel is Brunswick blue and that certainly does tend to have purple in it at times. I did the Rob Walker parade at Goodwood recently and one of my fears was that my blue wouldn't match everyone else's blue, but it seemed fine. (There were one or two cars which weren't quite the right colour). Brunswick Blue is/was an Aston Martin colour, I think, and is certainly fifties/sixties. Take this as an advisory, not necessarily a recommendation! It's fine for me, maybe not for you.

I agree Rolls-Royce is a good starting point, they have done several beautiful very dark blues over the years.

Mercedes also did a lovely blue so dark it is almost black unless the sun shines on it - it is quite a common shade on the W100 600.

Have you gone to a paint factors and gone through their colour chips ?
They'll have thousands to choose from
