Prompted by discussion elsewhere on the reasons for the ubiquitous VAG fart I thought about the two Alfasuds I owned in the early 80s - both 1350Tis . They had the endearing habit of talking to themselves when parked - even hours after parking up .I'd hear a sort of high , keening moan for a few seconds . Never found the reason although I was told it was air coming out of fuel filler .

Any recollections ? My personal view is that it was proof positive that Alfas are sentient creatures . Or was the sound actually the choir of angels which lives in every Italian car ?

Even my ex-wife, who is definitely not a petrol head liked to drive my Alfasud. 86bhp compared to 65bhp in her Peugeot 309GLD would bring out the devil in her.

The pops and crackles you got on the overrun, followed by the rasp as you opened the throttle again, always brought a smile to my face.

As for the sighing noise: probably a blocked fuel tank breather. Easy to check: open the fuel cap when it is sighing and if the noise stops you have found the source.
