Good Afternoon,

Im getting to the point where i need to sort out some proper insurance for my car. It's quite modified but structurally all standard. I've a document listing/ describing all modifications.

I'd also like european cover and the option to purchase track day cover too although thats not a deal breaker, can always get that separately.

Can anyone recommend a good company to deal with based on the above?

Thanks,

Scott

I have used Classicline and Admiral Classic in the past.

Both good for mods, but not sure about track days.

I use Peter James for the E Type and Henderson Taylor for the Elise - but I have a feeling Henderson Taylor only covers two seaters. Manning are also pretty decent, especially if you need track cover.

Footman James give me a good multi-vehicle policy with some non standard vehicles.

I have used Lancaster this year for the TR6, they were competitive and I have a guaranteed valuation. Also included was EU repatriation and roadside repair

Euro cover came as standard with my Classicline policy.

I shopped around a lot and nothing could beat them.

Have a look half way down the page and you'll see this:

A lot of the big names dealing with modified classics are mentioned.

What is the classic age these days? I've a '99 3.0 z3 which i do minimal miles in so guessing it would classify for a modern classic policy? Who are the best people to try?

While my 94 merc qualifies, std policies are more competitive. (direct line etc)

I use Classicline, have multiple vehicles on one policy, so just one renewal.

Breakdown cover, european road cover, and european breakdown all included as standard.

You never know how good (or bad) an insurance company is until you make a claim.
My Mercedes R129 is with Equity Red Star, very competitive premium, all the usual classic car stuff.
Last year my windscreen was damaged,so I got my local Mercedes specialist to quote for fitting a genuine Mercedes screen.I did not want an Autoglass type replacement.
ERS agreed without question, a new screen came from Germany and was fitted by Merc` experts, total cost about £750. All it cost me was a bit extra excess. I was well please as the screen was 24 years old and had lots of scratches.

But what would they pay out if the car was stolen or written off? Most classic car policies have an agreed value option,My R129 has an agreed value of £16000. I bet a standard policy would pay half that?

I use RH Classic Insurance (Now RH specialist insurance). What differentiates them from almost anyone else is they offer "cherished salvage", if the car is written off, they return the salvage to you, this even works in conjunction with agreed value. Policies include European cover and European Breakdown assistance. Not sure if they offer track day cover, I doubt modifications will be much of an issue. Their website is a bit confusing, best to just give them a call.

Do take out agreed value, it's bit of extra hassle but you're in the lap of the gods if you don't. I had a TVR written off a few years ago, the "expert" assessors took the average of the cheapest three "comparable" vehicles they could find for sale. Two of these were repaired write offs, one was in Holland, the other two over 100 miles away (everything in the South-East was £2-3k more) all were at least 1 year older than mine and none had FSH, which mine did. When this was pointed out to them, they did exclude the two write-offs, admitted they were supposed use local comparables but declared that as it was an unusual vehicle they'd had to consider cars further afield. They shrugged off the FSH issue on the grounds that it had only been done by specialists rather than dealers, I had to point out that there had been no dealer network for several years. They upped the valuation by around two grand but wouldn't budge further, IMHO they didn't want to lose face, they were still £5k short of what my local dealer valued the car at. Ended up having to travel to the other end of the country and chuck in an extra £2k to get a comparable car.

A heads up for anyone who is interested.

I have Healey 3000 which is (was until today) insured with Admiral. It has an agreed valuation certificate for £85,000, issued by Admiral after photographs of the build and finished car.

I have just been told that due to a policy change this value is now null and void. The maximum the car is insured for is £25,000. Apparently, this has been the case since July 2017 but no one thought of informing me.

I'm now insured with Classic Line who were very helpful.

Update.

Admiral has just called back and said there is no cap of £25,000 and I was misinformed. However, they can't tell me how much it is insured for. which is pretty much the point of an agreed valuation certificate.

Bloody useless.

I'll be staying with Classic Line.

I always used to use Carole Nash but admittedly never made a claim so can't say how good they are should something bad happen. They will however be 1st on my list when I get the tvr back on the road later this year.

Another example of why it's always best to deal with a classic specialist.

Yep, definitely a lesson learned. Just glad I found out with no damage, I'd have mighty pissed if the car was stolen or a total loss.

Got a quote with RH who have been good to deal with so far and also tried A-Plan, i've had the best experience with them so far and they are cheapest to boot. I'm getting copies of quotes in to compare before making the decision. Im not normally so anal about insurance but i need complete cover and agreed value should the worst happen to the car. Thanks again for the help, Scott.
